Persistent hiccups?

I have been experiencing frequent burping lately, sometimes with the taste of food I just ate, but I hardly feel bloated.
Is this considered bloating, or could it be due to a loose lower esophageal sphincter? I have tried to chew my food thoroughly and eat slowly, but I still burp, although the frequency is lower.
A while ago, I took anti-bloating medication for two weeks, which improved my symptoms somewhat, but recently my condition has returned to what it was before, with up to 30 burps a day.
How can I stop burping without taking medication?

RG, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/06/03

Miss, you have significant relaxation of the gastroesophageal junction.
Please pay attention to your dietary intake, and if necessary, medication can be taken.
If the effects are still not satisfactory, an endoscopy may be required.

Persistent belching, or excessive burping, can be an uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing condition. It is often caused by the accumulation of air in the stomach, which can be swallowed during eating, drinking, or even talking. Understanding the underlying causes and potential solutions can help manage this condition effectively.

Causes of Persistent Belching
1. Aerophagia: This is the most common cause of excessive belching. It occurs when a person swallows air while eating or drinking, especially if they do so quickly or while talking. Certain habits, such as chewing gum or drinking carbonated beverages, can also contribute to this condition.

2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): If the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly, stomach contents can flow back into the esophagus, leading to symptoms like belching, heartburn, and regurgitation. This could explain the taste of food you experience when belching.

3. Dietary Factors: Certain foods can increase gas production in the digestive system. Foods high in fiber, such as beans and lentils, as well as certain vegetables like broccoli and cabbage, can lead to increased belching. Additionally, consuming carbonated drinks can introduce more air into the stomach.

4. Food Intolerances: Lactose intolerance or other food sensitivities can lead to excessive gas and belching. If your body has difficulty digesting certain foods, it can result in gas buildup.

5. Medical Conditions: Conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or even infections can lead to increased belching. If the belching is accompanied by other symptoms like pain, nausea, or changes in appetite, it may be worth consulting a healthcare professional.

Solutions to Manage Persistent Belching
1. Eating Habits: Since you mentioned trying to chew slowly, continue this practice. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can also help reduce the amount of air swallowed. Avoid talking while eating, as this can lead to swallowing more air.

2. Avoid Carbonated Beverages: These drinks can introduce excess gas into your stomach. Opt for non-carbonated beverages instead.

3. Identify Trigger Foods: Keep a food diary to track what you eat and when belching occurs. This can help identify any specific foods that may be contributing to your symptoms.

4. Over-the-Counter Remedies: While you mentioned that you have taken anti-gas medication, consider trying simethicone-based products, which can help break down gas bubbles in the stomach.

5. Relaxation Techniques: Stress and anxiety can exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms. Techniques such as deep breathing, yoga, or meditation may help reduce the frequency of belching.

6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If your symptoms persist despite making lifestyle changes, it may be beneficial to consult a gastroenterologist. They can perform tests to rule out any underlying conditions and provide tailored treatment options.

Conclusion
Persistent belching can be a nuisance, but understanding its causes and implementing lifestyle changes can significantly reduce its frequency. It is essential to pay attention to your eating habits, dietary choices, and any accompanying symptoms. If the problem continues, seeking medical advice is crucial to ensure there are no underlying health issues contributing to your symptoms. By taking proactive steps, you can manage and potentially eliminate excessive belching without the need for medication.
