Persistent bloating throughout the day?
Hello, doctor.
I have been experiencing bloating for a month now.
Initially, it was just a feeling of fullness after meals, but my food intake has not increased compared to before.
I have been burping frequently, and even four to five hours after eating, I still feel very bloated.
Lying down makes me uncomfortable, and I have been unable to sleep through the night due to burping.
To cope with these symptoms, I started reducing my food intake and chewing slowly, but instead of improving, my condition has worsened.
Even drinking beverages, milk, or juice (none of which I have allergies to) causes bloating.
My abdomen feels bloated almost 24 hours a day, and even when I don’t eat, I still feel bloated.
The frequency of burping and passing gas has increased rather than decreased.
Now, I feel uncomfortable even when standing or sitting, and I can’t sleep well.
I also feel nauseous, and when I cough, I can feel a burning sensation in my throat, but I can’t bring anything up.
This has severely affected my daily life.
Currently, I am only drinking water and can only eat one slice of plain toast throughout the day.
I am really struggling to the point where I am afraid to eat.
Could you please tell me what kind of condition this might be and what treatment or improvement methods are available? Thank you very much!

Hello: If the symptoms are so severe and obvious that dietary adjustments do not help, it is recommended to consult a gastroenterologist for an evaluation of your condition.
The physician may prescribe medication or arrange for an endoscopy to determine the cause.

More Info
Chronic bloating can be a frustrating and uncomfortable condition, and it sounds like you have been experiencing significant symptoms that are affecting your daily life. Based on your description, it appears that you are dealing with persistent abdominal distension, excessive burping, and discomfort that worsens after eating, even with small amounts of food or liquids. These symptoms can be indicative of several underlying issues, and it is important to explore potential causes and solutions for relief.
Possible Causes of Chronic Bloating
1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): The symptoms of bloating and burping could be related to GERD, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and a burning sensation in the throat.
2. Functional Dyspepsia: This is a common condition characterized by chronic indigestion, which can include symptoms such as bloating, early satiety, and discomfort after meals. It often occurs without any identifiable structural abnormalities.
3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that can cause bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits. Stress and certain foods can exacerbate symptoms.
4. Food Intolerances or Sensitivities: Even if you do not have a known allergy, you may have an intolerance to certain foods (like lactose in dairy or fructose in fruits) that can lead to bloating.
5. Gastroparesis: This condition involves delayed gastric emptying, which can cause bloating, nausea, and fullness after eating small amounts of food.
6. Bacterial Overgrowth: An overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine can lead to excessive gas production and bloating.
7. Anxiety and Stress: Psychological factors can also play a significant role in gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating and discomfort.
Recommended Solutions for Relief
1. Dietary Modifications: Keeping a food diary can help identify any potential triggers. Consider eliminating common culprits such as dairy, gluten, and high-FODMAP foods (like certain fruits, beans, and onions) to see if symptoms improve.
2. Smaller, More Frequent Meals: Instead of reducing your food intake drastically, try eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. This can help reduce the feeling of fullness and bloating.
3. Hydration: Continue to drink plenty of water, as staying hydrated can aid digestion. However, try to avoid carbonated beverages, which can increase bloating.
4. Probiotics: Incorporating probiotics into your diet may help restore the balance of gut bacteria and improve digestive health. Yogurt, kefir, and probiotic supplements can be beneficial.
5. Over-the-Counter Medications: Antacids or medications containing simethicone can help relieve gas and bloating. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
6. Stress Management: Techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or cognitive behavioral therapy can help manage stress and anxiety, which may alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms.
7. Medical Evaluation: Given the severity and duration of your symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend tests such as an upper endoscopy, abdominal ultrasound, or breath tests to diagnose conditions like GERD, IBS, or bacterial overgrowth.
Conclusion
Chronic bloating can stem from various causes, and identifying the underlying issue is key to effective treatment. It is essential to work closely with a healthcare provider to develop a personalized management plan that addresses your symptoms and improves your quality of life. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention, especially since your symptoms have significantly impacted your daily activities and well-being.
