Increased smegma?
Hello doctor, I used to have no smegma during cleaning, but recently I suddenly have smegma.
Normally, my glans is exposed, and I haven't engaged in sexual activity with others.
What could be the issue?

Hello: The foreskin is quite special; it is recommended to rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.
Wear loose and breathable underwear, as this can help prevent your condition.
Wishing you good health.

Increased smegma production can be a concern for many individuals, and understanding its causes is essential for maintaining good genital health. Smegma is a natural substance composed of dead skin cells, oils, and moisture that can accumulate under the foreskin in males. While it is a normal bodily secretion, an increase in smegma can indicate various underlying issues that may need to be addressed.
Firstly, it is important to note that smegma production can vary from person to person and can be influenced by several factors, including hygiene practices, skin conditions, and anatomical changes. If you previously did not experience smegma but have recently noticed an increase, there are several potential explanations:
1. Hygiene Practices: One of the most common reasons for increased smegma is inadequate cleaning. Even if the glans (the head of the penis) is usually exposed, regular washing with soap and water is necessary to prevent the buildup of smegma. If your hygiene routine has changed, this could lead to an increase in smegma accumulation.
2. Skin Conditions: Certain skin conditions, such as dermatitis or infections, can lead to increased skin cell turnover or inflammation, resulting in more smegma production. Conditions like balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans, can also contribute to smegma buildup.
3. Anatomical Changes: Changes in the anatomy of the penis, such as phimosis (a condition where the foreskin cannot be fully retracted), can lead to smegma accumulation. If the foreskin is not retractable, smegma can build up under the foreskin, leading to irritation or infection.
4. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations can also affect the skin's oil production, potentially leading to increased smegma. This is less common but can occur during puberty or other hormonal changes.
5. Sexual Activity: Although you mentioned that you have not engaged in sexual activity, it is worth noting that sexual arousal can also lead to increased smegma production due to heightened gland activity.
If you are experiencing an increase in smegma, it is advisable to improve your hygiene routine by gently cleaning the area with warm water and mild soap. Ensure that you retract the foreskin (if possible) during cleaning to remove any accumulated smegma effectively.
If the problem persists despite improved hygiene, or if you notice any accompanying symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, or unusual discharge, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist. They can evaluate your condition, rule out any underlying infections or skin conditions, and provide appropriate treatment if necessary.
In summary, while an increase in smegma can be concerning, it is often manageable with proper hygiene. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is crucial for ensuring your genital health and addressing any potential underlying issues.
