Frequent urination persists after treatment for gonorrhea?
Hello doctor, I was diagnosed with gonorrhea in early June and immediately received treatment at a major hospital.
I received an injection and took antibiotics for two weeks.
During my follow-up appointment, the doctor said the bacterial load had decreased, and advised me to drink plenty of water, without prescribing any further medication.
I haven't returned for another appointment since my last visit on June 16th.
However, in the past few days, I've noticed some frequency in urination, with a persistent urge to urinate, but the amount is very small.
This sensation has lasted for about four to five days.
I do not feel any pain and there are no significant secretions like I experienced when I was initially diagnosed with gonorrhea.
However, I do feel a slight burning sensation in the urethra when urinating, and occasionally I notice a small amount of clear, slightly white discharge from the glans, but it is very minimal and infrequent.
During this time, I have not engaged in any sexual activity.
Could this indicate a recurrence of the infection, or could there be another reason for these symptoms?

Hello: If you drink more water (over 2500cc per day, avoiding beverages and alcohol) and still notice that your lifestyle remains the same, it is possible that there may be a recurrence.
You should return for a follow-up examination.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing some concerning symptoms following your treatment for gonorrhea. After being diagnosed and treated with antibiotics, it is not uncommon for some individuals to experience lingering urinary symptoms, even after the infection has been treated. Here’s a breakdown of what might be happening and what steps you can take.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Persistent Urination: The sensation of needing to urinate frequently, even when the amount is small, can be indicative of several issues. This could be due to residual irritation in the urinary tract from the initial infection or treatment. Sometimes, the tissues in the urinary tract can remain sensitive for a while after an infection has cleared.
2. Burning Sensation: The slight burning sensation you feel when urinating could be a sign of irritation or inflammation in the urethra. This is not uncommon after a urinary tract infection (UTI) or sexually transmitted infection (STI) treatment, as the tissues may take some time to heal fully.
3. Clear Discharge: The presence of a small amount of clear or slightly cloudy discharge from the glans (tip of the penis) can also be a normal post-infection symptom. However, if the discharge increases or changes in color or consistency, it could indicate a new infection or another issue.
Possible Causes
- Residual Irritation: After treatment for gonorrhea, the urinary tract may still be irritated, leading to symptoms like frequent urination and burning.
- Reinfection: While it’s less likely if you have not engaged in sexual activity since your treatment, reinfection is a possibility. This could occur if you were exposed to the bacteria again.
- Other Infections: Conditions such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or another sexually transmitted infection could also cause similar symptoms.
Recommendations
1. Hydration: Continue to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated can help flush out any irritants in the urinary tract and may alleviate some of the symptoms.
2. Avoid Irritants: Steer clear of caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, as these can irritate the bladder and exacerbate urinary symptoms.
3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If they worsen or if you develop new symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or significant changes in discharge, it’s essential to seek medical attention.
4. Follow-Up Appointment: Given that you are experiencing persistent symptoms after treatment, it would be wise to schedule a follow-up appointment with your healthcare provider. They may want to perform tests to rule out any reinfection or other underlying issues.
5. Testing: Your doctor may recommend a urine test to check for the presence of bacteria or other pathogens. This can help determine if there is an ongoing infection that needs to be addressed.
Conclusion
While it’s understandable to be concerned about the possibility of a reinfection or complications following your treatment for gonorrhea, many factors can contribute to your current symptoms. It’s crucial to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns. They can provide the most accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment options based on your specific situation. Remember, timely medical advice is key to ensuring your health and well-being.
