Frenulum Tears: Healing Time and Sexual Activity Concerns - Urology

The ligament is completely torn?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask you a few questions.
A few days ago, I was playing and, due to a lack of lubrication, I ended up masturbating too vigorously, which caused significant bleeding from the frenulum—there was blood all over the bathroom.
I went to the emergency room, and the doctor said that the frenulum had torn.
They offered two solutions: pressure to stop the bleeding and sutures, but I only opted for the first option, and the bleeding stopped.
After applying some ointment, the doctor advised me to return to the urology department for a follow-up in two days.
When I saw the urologist, he confirmed that my frenulum was completely torn and that once the wound heals, there should be no major issues.
However, he mentioned that the two points connected by the frenulum could be at risk of injury again, and he suggested circumcision.

I would like to ask how long it typically takes for a completely torn frenulum to heal after the wound has closed.
Also, after the wound heals, can I resume masturbation or sexual activity? Will there be a risk of re-injuring the frenulum? Is circumcision the only solution to this problem? (I should mention that I have phimosis, but the length of the frenulum is not too short.) I apologize for the many questions, and I would greatly appreciate your answers.
Thank you!

Hello: Generally, it takes about two weeks for a wound to heal sufficiently to feel at ease.
If you plan to engage in sexual activity, waiting 3-4 weeks is advisable.
Once the wound has healed, being overly careless could lead to re-injury.
Please keep the wound clean and dry, and temporarily avoid sexual activity or any DIY activities.
Wishing you good health.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your questions regarding frenulum tears and the associated concerns about healing time and sexual activity. It’s important to address these issues with care and understanding.

Firstly, a frenulum tear, particularly in the context of excessive friction during masturbation without adequate lubrication, can lead to significant bleeding and discomfort. The frenulum is a sensitive band of tissue located on the underside of the penis, and injuries to this area can be painful and alarming, especially if they result in heavy bleeding.
In terms of healing time, the duration can vary depending on the severity of the tear. Generally, minor tears may heal within a few days to a week, while more significant injuries could take longer, potentially up to two weeks or more. It’s crucial to follow your healthcare provider's advice regarding wound care and to monitor for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge.

Regarding your question about resuming sexual activity or masturbation after the frenulum has healed, it is typically advisable to wait until you are completely pain-free and the area has healed adequately. Engaging in sexual activity too soon can risk re-injury, especially if the frenulum is still tender or if there is any residual healing tissue. It’s best to consult with your urologist or healthcare provider for personalized advice based on your specific situation.

As for the recommendation to consider a circumcision (or frenuloplasty), this is often suggested in cases where recurrent frenulum tears occur or if there are issues such as phimosis (tight foreskin). If you have a condition like phimosis, where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted, it may contribute to friction and tearing during sexual activity. A circumcision can alleviate these issues by removing the foreskin, thus reducing the risk of future injuries. However, this decision should be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional who can assess your individual circumstances and provide guidance on the best course of action.

In summary, allow adequate time for healing, avoid sexual activity until you are fully recovered, and consult your healthcare provider regarding the potential need for circumcision or other interventions. Your health and comfort are paramount, and it’s essential to address any concerns you may have with a medical professional who can provide tailored advice. Thank you for your questions, and I wish you a smooth recovery!
