Floating stools
Hello, doctor! After having a bowel movement, I noticed white, thread-like floating objects in the toilet.
In early May, I experienced frequent urination and a burning sensation in the urethra.
I visited a doctor and took a week of doxycycline, which resolved the symptoms, but I have been experiencing pain on the left side since then.
I have seen both orthopedic and rheumatology specialists without improvement.
Could you please tell me what the white, thread-like floating objects are? Also, are they related to the pain on my left side?

Dr. Liao Zhongxin reply Internal Medicine
Dear readers:
A: 1.
Doxycycline can treat Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, rickettsiae, and some sexually transmitted pathogens.
2.
The most common side effect is gastrointestinal discomfort, as the medication can also kill beneficial bacteria in the intestines and reproductive tract, leading to an overgrowth of fungi, increased secretions, and potentially diarrhea or allergic reactions.
3.
After taking doxycycline, it is advisable to avoid consuming milk or irritating beverages, as they can neutralize the medication and lead to unpredictable consequences.
Therefore, if you experience the above symptoms, stop the medication and monitor whether the symptoms improve.
If there is no improvement, you may seek further consultation and treatment from a gastroenterologist or infectious disease specialist.
Thank you!

The presence of floating white fibers in stool can be concerning, and it's understandable that you're seeking clarity on this issue. Floating fibers can be attributed to several factors, and while they may not always indicate a serious health problem, it's essential to consider the context of your overall health and any accompanying symptoms.
Firstly, floating white fibers in stool could be remnants of undigested food, particularly if you have recently consumed foods high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, or whole grains. Foods like mushrooms, certain grains, or even some types of nuts can sometimes appear as fibrous material in stool. However, if these fibers are persistent and not associated with dietary changes, further investigation may be warranted.
Another potential cause could be related to gastrointestinal issues. Conditions such as malabsorption syndromes, where the body does not adequately absorb nutrients from food, can lead to undigested food particles appearing in the stool. This could be due to conditions like celiac disease, Crohn's disease, or pancreatic insufficiency. If you have experienced changes in your bowel habits, weight loss, or other gastrointestinal symptoms, it would be prudent to discuss these with your healthcare provider.
Regarding your previous symptoms of frequent urination and burning sensation during urination, which resolved after a course of antibiotics, it is possible that these were indicative of a urinary tract infection (UTI). However, the persistent left-sided pain you mentioned could be unrelated to the floating fibers in your stool. Left-sided pain can stem from various sources, including musculoskeletal issues, gastrointestinal problems, or even referred pain from other organs. Since you have already consulted specialists in orthopedics and rheumatology without improvement, it might be beneficial to explore other avenues, such as gastrointestinal evaluation or imaging studies, to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while floating white fibers in stool can be benign and related to dietary factors, persistent symptoms warrant further evaluation. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, who can guide you through appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment options based on your specific symptoms and medical history. If you notice any additional symptoms, such as changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, or weight loss, be sure to report these to your doctor, as they can provide crucial information for diagnosis and management.
