After wisdom tooth extraction, the gum tissue may become swollen or irritated?

Hello Doctor: I had my lower right impacted wisdom tooth extracted over four years ago.
The socket has shrunk and has been covered by gum tissue.
However, there is a small area of gum near my molar that has grown taller, almost protruding above the tooth.
Sometimes, I feel a pressure against the teeth in front of it when I bite down, resulting in a tight sensation.
But most of the time, I don't feel any pushing.
Should I have this addressed?

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is not uncommon for patients to experience changes in their gum tissue, including the potential for gum overgrowth or hyperplasia. In your case, it seems that you have developed a small area of gum tissue that is higher than the surrounding gums, particularly near your molar. This can sometimes occur as a response to the extraction and the healing process that follows.

Firstly, it is important to understand that gum overgrowth can be a result of several factors, including irritation from adjacent teeth, plaque accumulation, or even hormonal changes. In your situation, the feeling of pressure or tightness when biting down could indicate that the overgrown gum tissue is indeed affecting your bite or the alignment of your teeth. While you may not experience discomfort most of the time, any sensation of pressure or tightness should not be ignored.

From a medical perspective, here are a few considerations regarding your situation:
1. Assessment by a Dental Professional: It is advisable to have a dental professional evaluate the area of gum overgrowth. They can determine whether the tissue is merely an overgrowth due to healing or if it is indicative of a more serious issue, such as periodontal disease or an infection.

2. Potential Treatment Options: If the gum tissue is causing discomfort or affecting your bite, your dentist may recommend treatment options. This could include a simple procedure to trim the excess gum tissue, which can alleviate the pressure you are feeling. Additionally, they may suggest improved oral hygiene practices to prevent further irritation.

3. Monitoring Changes: If you choose not to pursue immediate treatment, it is essential to monitor the area for any changes. If the gum tissue continues to grow, becomes painful, or if you notice any signs of infection (such as swelling, redness, or discharge), you should seek dental care promptly.

4. Oral Hygiene: Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial, especially in areas where there is gum overgrowth. Ensure that you are brushing and flossing effectively to minimize plaque buildup, which can exacerbate gum issues.

5. Follow-Up Care: Regular dental check-ups are vital for monitoring your oral health, especially after significant procedures like wisdom tooth extraction. Your dentist can provide ongoing assessments and recommendations tailored to your specific needs.

In summary, while gum overgrowth after wisdom tooth extraction can be a common occurrence, it is essential to address any concerns you may have, especially if you are experiencing pressure or discomfort. Consulting with your dentist will provide you with the best course of action, whether that involves monitoring the situation or taking steps to manage the gum tissue effectively. Remember, proactive dental care is key to maintaining your oral health and preventing potential complications down the line.
