After taking oral contraceptives
Hello doctor, I took the oral contraceptive pill (Diane) for 21 days starting on May 27, and after stopping the medication, I got my period on June 22.
I only took it for one month and did not continue.
However, my period came again on July 2, and I'm unsure why this happened.
My previous doctor advised me to continue taking the medication, but I don't want to take it anymore.
Is that okay?
Wanchun, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/07/04
Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, my period came again on July 2nd, which may be related to ovulation.
If you want to conceive, you can use ovulation medication; otherwise, it is still recommended to take oral contraceptives.
Wishing you good health.

Irregular periods after stopping birth control pills are a common concern for many women. When you take hormonal contraceptives like the pill, they regulate your menstrual cycle by providing a consistent level of hormones in your body. However, once you stop taking the pills, your body needs time to readjust and return to its natural hormonal rhythm. This adjustment period can lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle, including changes in the timing, flow, and duration of your periods.
In your case, you mentioned that you took the birth control pill (Dailian) for 21 days and then stopped. After stopping, you experienced a menstrual period on June 22, followed by another on July 2. This could be attributed to several factors:
1. Hormonal Adjustment: After discontinuing the pill, your body may take some time to regulate its hormone levels. This can lead to fluctuations in your menstrual cycle, resulting in periods that may come sooner than expected or be lighter or heavier than usual.
2. Withdrawal Bleeding: The first period after stopping the pill is often referred to as withdrawal bleeding, which occurs due to the sudden drop in hormone levels. This bleeding can sometimes be lighter or shorter than your typical period.
3. Anovulatory Cycles: After stopping hormonal birth control, it is not uncommon for some women to experience anovulatory cycles, where ovulation does not occur. This can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting.
4. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can also contribute to irregular periods. If you have a history of such conditions, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.
Regarding your doctor's recommendation to continue taking the pill, it is essential to consider your personal health goals and preferences. If you are not comfortable with the idea of continuing hormonal contraceptives, you have the right to decline. However, it is crucial to communicate your concerns with your healthcare provider. They can provide you with alternative options for managing your menstrual cycle or discuss non-hormonal contraceptive methods if that is a consideration for you.
If you choose not to resume the pill, it may be helpful to monitor your menstrual cycle for a few months. Keeping track of your periods, any associated symptoms, and any significant changes can provide valuable information for you and your healthcare provider. If your cycles remain irregular or if you experience any concerning symptoms (such as excessive bleeding, severe pain, or significant mood changes), it would be advisable to schedule a follow-up appointment for further evaluation.
In summary, irregular periods after stopping birth control pills are typically a normal part of the adjustment process as your body returns to its natural hormonal balance. While it is generally safe to refrain from continuing the pill if you do not wish to, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider is essential to ensure that you receive the best care tailored to your needs.
