There are white protrusions on the tongue?
Hello.
I would like to inquire about a white bump in the center of my tongue.
It doesn't hurt when I touch it, but it doesn't go away regardless of brushing or scraping it.
Additionally, I sometimes feel like something is stuck in my throat when swallowing.
It may resolve on its own in about four to five days, but it keeps recurring.
It has recurred approximately three times in the past six months.
I would like to know if this is serious and if it could be cancer.

More Info
The presence of white bumps on the tongue can be concerning, especially when they persist or recur over time. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a condition known as oral leukoplakia or possibly a type of oral thrush (candidiasis), among other possibilities. Let’s delve into the potential causes, implications, and when to seek medical attention.
Possible Causes
1. Oral Thrush (Candidiasis): This is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. It often appears as white patches or bumps on the tongue and can be scraped off, revealing a red, sometimes bleeding surface underneath. It is more common in individuals with weakened immune systems, those who use inhaled corticosteroids, or those who have recently taken antibiotics.
2. Leukoplakia: This condition manifests as white patches on the mucous membranes of the mouth, including the tongue. It is often associated with irritation from tobacco use, alcohol consumption, or chronic irritation from rough teeth or dental appliances. While leukoplakia itself is not cancerous, it can sometimes be a precursor to oral cancer, especially if the patches are persistent and cannot be easily removed.
3. Geographic Tongue: This benign condition presents as irregular, smooth, red patches on the tongue surrounded by white borders. It can cause discomfort but is generally harmless and does not require treatment.
4. Oral Lichen Planus: This is an inflammatory condition that can cause white, lacy patches or bumps on the tongue and inside the cheeks. It can be associated with stress and certain medications and may require treatment if it causes pain or discomfort.
5. Other Causes: Other potential causes include trauma from biting the tongue, allergic reactions, or even viral infections like herpes simplex.
Concerns and Cancer Risk
While the symptoms you describe—such as the white bump being painless and the sensation of something stuck in your throat—are not definitive indicators of cancer, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. Oral cancer can present with similar symptoms, including persistent sores, lumps, or patches that do not heal. Risk factors for oral cancer include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, and HPV infection.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given that your symptoms have recurred multiple times over the past six months, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, preferably an oral surgeon or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They may perform a thorough examination and possibly a biopsy to rule out any serious conditions, including cancer.
Conclusion
In summary, while the presence of a white bump on your tongue that is painless and resolves on its own may not be immediately alarming, the recurrence and associated symptoms warrant further investigation. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial in managing any potential underlying conditions effectively. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your oral health. Please make an appointment with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail and receive appropriate care.
