Red spots on the glans?
I noticed two red spots on the glans while showering.
Walking causes some pain due to friction from my pants.
Could this be related to sweating and heat, or is it associated with a sexually transmitted infection (I have not engaged in sexual activity)?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: Without sexual activity, it cannot be classified as a sexually transmitted infection; however, skin inflammation may occur.
It is recommended to maintain cleanliness and dryness, avoid using soap or body wash, rinse with clean water, and then dry thoroughly.
If there is no improvement in 1-2 days, seek medical attention.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Red spots on the glans (the head of the penis) can be concerning for many individuals, especially when they are accompanied by discomfort or pain. There are several potential causes for these symptoms, and understanding them can help alleviate concerns and guide appropriate action.
Possible Causes of Red Spots on the Glans
1. Irritation or Friction: One of the most common causes of red spots or irritation on the glans is friction. This can occur from tight clothing, excessive sweating, or even from activities such as walking or exercising. If the spots are not accompanied by other symptoms like discharge or severe pain, they may simply be a result of irritation.
2. Infections: While you mentioned not having engaged in sexual activity, infections can still occur. Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) can be caused by poor hygiene, irritants, or infections (bacterial or fungal). Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and sometimes discharge.
3. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Although you have not had sexual intercourse, it is important to note that some STIs can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. Conditions such as herpes or human papillomavirus (HPV) can present with red spots or lesions. If there is any chance of exposure, it is wise to consider this as a potential cause.
4. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents can also lead to localized irritation and redness. If you have recently changed any products that come into contact with the genital area, this could be a factor.
5. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can also affect the genital area, leading to red spots or patches. These conditions are often chronic and may require specific treatments.
What to Do Next
Given the discomfort you are experiencing, it is advisable to take the following steps:
- Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that the area is kept clean and dry. Use mild, unscented soap and avoid any harsh products that could irritate the skin.
- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that clothing is causing friction, consider wearing looser-fitting underwear and pants to reduce irritation.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the spots. If they persist, change in appearance, or if you develop additional symptoms such as discharge, fever, or increased pain, it is important to seek medical attention.
- Consult a Urologist: If the red spots do not improve or if you have concerns about STIs or other infections, it is best to consult a urologist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend tests to determine the underlying cause.
Conclusion
While red spots on the glans can be alarming, many causes are benign and can be managed with proper care. However, due to the potential for infections or other conditions, it is crucial to remain vigilant and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
