Is it pregnancy or is my period about to start?

I originally had my period on June 13, but then I got it again two weeks later on June 28, and it started with some spotting for 2-3 days before the actual flow began.
Now, on July 23, I am experiencing some breast tenderness, and two days ago I had issues with shortness of breath and a rapid heartbeat.
I also feel a bit warm.
On June 23, my boyfriend penetrated me deeply.
Doctor, what could be going on with me? I am also experiencing some diarrhea, and my periods have usually been quite regular, coming every 28 days.
I'm feeling quite anxious...

Dr. Huang Yiwen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello Ms.
Yu: Your period is overdue, and the most likely reasons are menstrual irregularity or early pregnancy.
I suggest you not to worry too much and first take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
If you are still concerned, consult a doctor for further evaluation.

It sounds like you're experiencing a lot of uncertainty and anxiety regarding your menstrual cycle and potential pregnancy. Let's break down your symptoms and concerns to provide some clarity.

Firstly, it's important to understand that menstrual cycles can sometimes be irregular due to various factors, including stress, hormonal changes, or even lifestyle adjustments. The fact that you had a period on June 13 and then experienced bleeding again on June 28, especially with the presence of blood streaks, could indicate a few possibilities. This could be a sign of an irregular menstrual cycle, or it could be implantation bleeding if you are indeed pregnant. Implantation bleeding typically occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, which can happen around the time your next period is due.

The symptoms you describe—breast tenderness, a feeling of warmth, and rapid heartbeat—can also be associated with early pregnancy, but they can also be linked to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or other hormonal fluctuations. The feeling of breathlessness and rapid heart rate could be due to anxiety, especially if you're feeling tense about the possibility of being pregnant. It's not uncommon for individuals to experience heightened anxiety during this time, which can manifest physically.

Regarding your gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea, this can be caused by a variety of factors, including dietary changes, stress, or even early pregnancy. Some women experience gastrointestinal disturbances in early pregnancy due to hormonal changes. However, if diarrhea persists or is accompanied by severe discomfort, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.

Given your concerns, the best course of action would be to take a home pregnancy test if you suspect you might be pregnant. These tests are generally reliable and can provide you with a clearer answer. If the test is positive, or if you continue to experience unusual symptoms, it would be advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test to confirm pregnancy and assess your overall health.

In the meantime, try to manage your anxiety by practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle exercise. Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can also help with your overall well-being.

Lastly, if you have any concerns about your sexual health or if you feel that your symptoms are affecting your daily life, don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional. They can provide you with the support and guidance you need during this uncertain time. Remember, it's always better to seek medical advice when in doubt, as they can offer personalized care based on your specific situation.
