Can I get pregnant?

Hello, doctor.
My menstrual cycle has been regular for the past six months, approximately 25 to 28 days.
My last period started on June 24, and I had unprotected intercourse with my boyfriend on July 17.
My period is now 5 days late.
Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant? I have experienced two previous instances where my period was delayed for almost two months.
Thank you for your help!

Xiao Mei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/07/25

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances of pregnancy are low, but it is always best to take preventive measures beforehand.
Do not rely on the safe period.
If your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to the concern of a delayed period and the possibility of pregnancy, there are several factors to consider. Based on your description, your menstrual cycle has typically ranged from 25 to 28 days, and your last period started on June 24. If your cycle is consistent, you would expect your next period around July 19. Since you mentioned that your period is now delayed by five days, it is understandable that you are feeling anxious about the possibility of being pregnant, especially after having unprotected intercourse.

First, it is important to note that having unprotected sex does carry a risk of pregnancy, particularly if it occurs during your fertile window. The fertile window typically includes the days leading up to and including ovulation, which can vary depending on the length of your cycle. In your case, if you had unprotected intercourse on July 17, it was close to the time you would have ovulated, assuming a typical cycle length. This increases the likelihood of pregnancy if ovulation occurred around that time.

However, a delayed period can also be attributed to various non-pregnancy-related factors. Stress, changes in weight, hormonal imbalances, and other health issues can all affect your menstrual cycle. Given that you have experienced irregularities in your cycle in the past, it is possible that this delay could be due to factors unrelated to pregnancy.

To assess the possibility of pregnancy, it is recommended that you take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, as they measure the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. Since you are already five days late, a home pregnancy test should provide reliable results. If the test is positive, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and confirmation.

If the test is negative and your period does not arrive within a week, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional. They can help determine the underlying cause of your delayed period and provide guidance on any necessary interventions.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the timing of your unprotected intercourse, it is essential to consider other factors that may contribute to a delayed period. Taking a home pregnancy test will be the best next step to clarify your situation. If you have further concerns or if your period remains absent, seeking medical advice is always a prudent choice. Remember, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider about your menstrual health is crucial for your overall well-being.
