Ear problems and hearing issues?

In recent years, I have experienced difficulty hearing in my right ear due to water getting in while showering or swimming.
I previously visited a general clinic where I was given ear drops to soften the earwax, but it doesn't seem to help much.
Should I seek medical attention? After the water gets in, the feeling of fullness seems to improve after a while, but I often experience a sensation of pressure and blockage.

Hello: It is generally recommended to perform local treatment for thorough cleaning after softening earwax, which should lead to complete improvement.
It is advised to visit an otolaryngology clinic or hospital for further treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.

When it comes to ear blockage and hearing issues, particularly after experiences like water entering the ear during bathing or swimming, it is essential to understand the underlying causes and when to seek medical help. Your symptoms of a feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear, especially after exposure to water, suggest that you may be dealing with a few potential issues, such as earwax buildup, fluid retention, or even Eustachian tube dysfunction.

Firstly, it's important to recognize that the ear is a delicate structure, and any sensation of blockage or muffled hearing should not be taken lightly. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure. If this tube becomes dysfunctional, it can lead to a feeling of fullness in the ear, especially after water exposure. This dysfunction can be temporary and may resolve on its own, but if it persists, it can lead to further complications.

You mentioned that you have previously visited a clinic where you were prescribed ear drops to soften earwax. While this is a common approach, it may not always be effective, especially if the blockage is not solely due to wax buildup. If you continue to experience a sensation of fullness or muffled hearing, it is advisable to seek further medical evaluation. An Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist can perform a thorough examination, which may include an otoscopic evaluation to check for any obstructions, fluid in the middle ear, or signs of infection.

In some cases, if water becomes trapped in the ear canal, it can lead to a condition known as swimmer's ear (otitis externa), which may require specific treatment. Symptoms of swimmer's ear include itching, redness, and discomfort in the ear canal, and it can sometimes lead to more severe infections if left untreated.
If you find that your symptoms improve after some time but continue to recur, it may be beneficial to consider preventive measures. For instance, using earplugs while swimming or tilting your head to allow water to drain out after bathing can help minimize the chances of water getting trapped in the ear. Additionally, practicing proper ear hygiene and avoiding the use of cotton swabs can prevent pushing earwax deeper into the ear canal, which can exacerbate blockage.

In summary, while occasional feelings of fullness or muffled hearing may resolve on their own, persistent symptoms warrant further investigation. It is advisable to consult with an ENT specialist who can provide a comprehensive assessment and recommend appropriate treatment options. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and ensure that your hearing health is maintained. Remember, your ears are vital for communication and balance, so taking care of them is essential for your overall well-being.
