What are the post-operative care instructions after mole removal surgery or laser treatment?
Hello, I had a flat mole on my chin that was about 0.5 cm in size.
I underwent laser treatment at a dermatology clinic on June 30.
After a month, not only did it grow back, but it also became deeper and larger, with a slight protrusion of about 0.1 cm.
Therefore, I returned for another laser treatment on July 27.
The doctor mentioned that if it grows back again, I would need to undergo excision surgery at a hospital.
I checked online, and the costs range from $150 (just for the consultation fee) to $7,000.
I would like to know if there is any health insurance coverage for this surgery at the hospital and how much it would actually cost (if it does grow back, I estimate I would go to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital).
Additionally, I would like to know if there are any methods to prevent it from worsening like it did last time.
During my laser treatment, the clinic instructed me to apply a bandage and breathable tape for three days, and then to continuously apply Gentamicin ointment.
They also advised that if I wanted to use artificial skin, I should wait until the scab has fallen off.
However, I found online that many clinics recommend keeping artificial skin on and changing it when it becomes saturated, as this would help the wound heal flat.
Some even suggest that allowing it to scab on its own could lead to scarring.
Therefore, I would like to ask what the correct approach is.
Thank you!

Without a direct examination, it is difficult to determine.
If you are very concerned, you should consult your attending physician, as they are most familiar with your condition.

Post-surgery care for mole removal, especially after laser treatment, is crucial for optimal healing and minimizing the risk of recurrence. In Taiwan, the costs associated with mole removal can vary significantly based on the method used, the facility, and whether the procedure is covered by health insurance.
Cost Insights
1. Health Insurance Coverage: In Taiwan, the National Health Insurance (NHI) may cover certain procedures, including surgical excision of moles, if deemed medically necessary. However, laser treatments for cosmetic reasons typically are not covered. If your mole is suspected to be malignant or if it causes discomfort, you may have a better chance of getting coverage. It’s essential to consult with your dermatologist or surgeon about the specifics of your case and whether they can provide documentation to support the need for surgical removal.
2. Cost Range: As you mentioned, the costs can range from NT$150 for a consultation to NT$7,000 or more for the actual procedure. The price will depend on the complexity of the surgery, the facility's reputation, and the surgeon's experience. Always inquire about the total costs upfront, including any follow-up visits or additional treatments that may be necessary.
Post-Surgery Care Tips
1. Wound Care: After mole removal, proper wound care is essential to promote healing and prevent infection. The general advice includes:
- Keep the area clean: Gently clean the area with mild soap and water. Avoid scrubbing the site.
- Moisturize: Applying a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin) can help prevent infection. However, some dermatologists recommend using a silicone gel or sheet after the wound has healed to minimize scarring.
- Cover the wound: Initially, covering the area with a sterile bandage is recommended. After a few days, if the area is healing well, you may switch to a breathable dressing or leave it uncovered to promote air circulation.
2. Avoiding Irritation: It’s crucial to avoid picking at the scab or exposing the area to excessive moisture, such as swimming pools or hot tubs, until it has fully healed. Sun exposure can also lead to pigmentation changes, so using sunscreen on the area once healed is advisable.
3. Artificial Skin vs. Natural Healing: The debate over whether to use artificial skin or allow the wound to heal naturally varies among practitioners. Some dermatologists advocate for using artificial skin to protect the area and promote even healing, while others suggest letting the wound scab naturally. It’s best to follow your doctor’s specific instructions regarding this matter.
4. Monitoring for Recurrence: After mole removal, keep an eye on the area for any signs of recurrence, such as changes in color, size, or texture. If you notice any concerning changes, contact your dermatologist immediately.
5. Follow-Up Visits: Regular follow-up appointments are essential to monitor the healing process and address any concerns. If the mole returns after laser treatment, your doctor may recommend a different approach, such as surgical excision, which can provide a more definitive solution.
Preventive Measures
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent a mole from returning, maintaining healthy skin through proper sun protection, regular skin checks, and consulting with a dermatologist about any changes in your skin can help. If you have a history of moles or skin cancer, discuss with your healthcare provider about a personalized skin care plan.
In conclusion, understanding the costs and care involved in mole removal can help you make informed decisions. Always consult with your healthcare provider for tailored advice and follow their recommendations closely to ensure the best outcomes.
