Fast Heartbeat and Chest Discomfort: Should You Be Concerned? - Cardiology

Rapid heartbeat / Chest tightness

Hello doctor, I have been experiencing rapid heartbeats lately, and occasionally I feel like my heart skips a beat, alternating between fast and slow.
During my health check this year, my heart rate was measured at 96 beats per minute.
I also feel a dull pain in my left chest (in a specific location).
Could this be caused by stress? Do I need to go to the hospital for an examination? Thank you.

Experiencing a fast heartbeat and chest discomfort can understandably be concerning, and it’s important to approach these symptoms with both caution and a clear understanding of what they might indicate. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing palpitations—an awareness of your heartbeat that can feel like it’s racing, pounding, or skipping beats. This can be accompanied by discomfort in the chest, which you describe as a dull pain in a specific area.

First, let’s address the potential causes of your symptoms. Fast heartbeats (tachycardia) can be triggered by various factors, including stress, anxiety, caffeine consumption, dehydration, or even certain medications. In many cases, these factors can lead to temporary increases in heart rate without any underlying heart disease. Stress and anxiety, in particular, can lead to heightened sympathetic nervous system activity, which can cause your heart to race and may also contribute to feelings of chest discomfort.

However, it’s crucial to consider that while many cases of palpitations are benign, they can sometimes indicate more serious conditions, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or significant chest pain. Given that you have mentioned a history of feeling like your heart skips a beat, this could also be a sign of an arrhythmia, which is an irregular heartbeat.
The fact that your heart rate was measured at 96 beats per minute during a recent health check is within the normal range, but it’s on the higher side of resting heart rates, which typically range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. If you are experiencing fluctuations in your heart rate, it would be wise to monitor these occurrences closely.
Regarding the chest discomfort, localized pain can sometimes be related to musculoskeletal issues, such as muscle strain or costochondritis, rather than a cardiac issue. However, persistent or severe chest pain should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions, including heart disease.

In light of your symptoms, I would recommend the following steps:
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Given your symptoms of fast heartbeat and chest discomfort, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) or a Holter monitor, to assess your heart's rhythm over a period of time.

2. Lifestyle Modifications: Consider reducing caffeine intake, managing stress through relaxation techniques (such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga), and ensuring you stay hydrated. Regular physical activity can also help improve your cardiovascular health and reduce anxiety.

3. Keep a Symptom Diary: Document when your symptoms occur, their duration, and any associated activities or stressors. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the cause of your symptoms.

4. Monitor Your Symptoms: If you experience any worsening of symptoms, such as severe chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting, seek immediate medical attention.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to stress or anxiety, it is essential to rule out any underlying cardiac issues. A healthcare professional can provide a thorough evaluation and guide you on the appropriate next steps. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to heart health.
