The secretion is thick and has an unusual odor?

I usually don't have such thick or abundant discharge, but during sexual intercourse with my boyfriend, I experience very thick discharge with a strong odor.
This issue has been ongoing for a week or two.
How can I improve this? Should I see a doctor? Is there a possibility of pregnancy?

Qi Qi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/08/21

Hello Miss Chi Chi: The presence of thick vaginal discharge with a strong odor may indicate bacterial vaginosis, and it is advisable to seek treatment from a doctor.
As for the possibility of pregnancy, it is best to wait until after your missed period to take a urine test for confirmation.

More Info

Experiencing thick and odorous discharge after sexual intercourse can be concerning, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical advice.
Firstly, the characteristics of vaginal discharge can vary significantly based on several factors, including hormonal changes, menstrual cycle phases, and sexual activity. In your case, the increase in thickness and odor following sexual intercourse may indicate a few possibilities:
1. Normal Physiological Changes: During sexual arousal, the body produces more lubrication, which can sometimes mix with vaginal secretions, leading to a thicker consistency. However, if the discharge has a strong odor, it may not be purely physiological.

2. Infection: A strong odor, especially if accompanied by changes in color or consistency, could indicate an infection. Common infections include bacterial vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections. BV often presents with a fishy odor and a grayish discharge, while yeast infections typically cause a thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge without a strong odor. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also cause abnormal discharge and should be ruled out.

3. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other hormonal fluctuations can affect the nature of vaginal discharge. If you have a history of hormonal issues, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Sometimes, the use of certain lubricants, condoms, or even soaps can cause irritation, leading to changes in discharge. If you’ve recently changed any products you use, consider reverting to previous ones to see if symptoms improve.

When to See a Doctor
Given that your symptoms have persisted for one to two weeks, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. A gynecologist can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam and possibly lab tests, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, especially if an infection is present.

Pregnancy Considerations
Regarding the possibility of pregnancy, thick discharge alone is not a definitive indicator of pregnancy. Other signs of pregnancy include missed periods, nausea, breast tenderness, and fatigue. If you suspect you might be pregnant, taking a home pregnancy test or consulting with a healthcare provider would be prudent.

Solutions and Management
1. Maintain Hygiene: Ensure proper genital hygiene. Use mild, unscented soaps and avoid douching, as this can disrupt the natural flora of the vagina.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms, such as itching, burning, or changes in menstrual cycles, and report these to your doctor.

3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that certain products may be causing irritation, discontinue their use and see if your symptoms improve.

4. Stay Hydrated and Healthy: A balanced diet and adequate hydration can help maintain overall vaginal health.

In conclusion, while some changes in discharge can be normal, the presence of a strong odor and significant changes in consistency warrant further investigation. Consulting with a healthcare provider will help clarify the situation and provide appropriate treatment if necessary. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing these concerns early can prevent complications down the line.
