Cauliflower issue
Doctor, I have been diagnosed with genital warts, but after the electrosurgery, the doctor only prescribed anti-inflammatory and pain relief medications for me.
The ointment is also a general wound care product.
I would like to ask if I should be taking any antiviral medications and using a specific ointment for genital warts.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: After electrosurgery treatment, there are no antiviral medications for the wart virus.
As for the specialized ointment for warts, it is intended for individuals who have not undergone electrosurgery.
If you wish to use it, you can purchase it to apply once the wound has completely healed (remember this).
However, it is not personally recommended.
Wishing you good health.

Cauliflower warts, also known as genital warts, are caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear as small, flesh-colored or gray growths that resemble cauliflower. While they are not harmful in themselves, they can be uncomfortable and may lead to emotional distress due to their appearance.
After undergoing electrosurgery, which is a common treatment for removing warts, it is essential to follow the doctor's post-operative care instructions. The medications prescribed, such as anti-inflammatory and pain relief medications, are typically aimed at managing discomfort and preventing infection at the surgical site. However, these medications do not address the underlying viral infection.
In terms of antiviral medications, there are currently no specific antiviral treatments that can eliminate HPV from the body. The immune system usually clears the virus on its own over time. However, there are topical treatments specifically designed for warts, such as imiquimod (Aldara) or podofilox (Condylox), which can help stimulate the immune response to fight the virus and reduce the appearance of warts. These medications are often recommended for use after the initial removal of the warts to prevent recurrence.
If you are experiencing persistent warts or new growths after treatment, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may suggest additional treatments, such as cryotherapy (freezing the warts), laser therapy, or further surgical options. It is also important to discuss any concerns regarding the effectiveness of your current treatment plan and whether additional antiviral therapy might be appropriate.
In addition to medical treatments, maintaining a healthy immune system is vital in managing HPV. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management. Some studies suggest that certain supplements, such as vitamin C and zinc, may support immune function, but you should consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplements.
Lastly, it is essential to practice safe sex to reduce the risk of transmitting HPV to partners. Using condoms can lower the risk, but they do not provide complete protection since HPV can infect areas not covered by a condom.
In summary, while there are no antiviral medications that can cure HPV, there are effective treatments for managing the symptoms and appearance of cauliflower warts. It is important to have an open dialogue with your healthcare provider about your treatment options and any concerns you may have regarding your condition.
