What is the definition of virginity for males and females in the medical community of the Republic of China (Taiwan)? (Forwarded from the Minister's mailbox)
Good evening, Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of China.
There are multiple definitions regarding virginity for both males and females.
One definition states that if a person has engaged in masturbation, they are no longer considered a virgin; another definition states that a male is no longer a virgin if his penis has penetrated a vagina.
Therefore, I would like to ask the Ministry of Health and Welfare which definition is currently adopted by the medical community in the Republic of China, or if there is another definition.
Due to work commitments, I am unable to take phone calls, so please prioritize communication via email.
Thank you.
Guo Xiansheng, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/08/24
Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the second definition seems to be more appropriate.
Wishing you good health.

Defining virginity is a complex issue that varies significantly across cultures, societies, and even within different fields of study, including medicine. In Taiwan, as in many other places, the medical community does not have a universally accepted definition of virginity. This ambiguity is largely due to the interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that influence how individuals perceive and define virginity.
From a medical perspective, virginity is often associated with the concept of sexual intercourse, specifically the first instance of penetrative sexual activity. Traditionally, many people have defined virginity in terms of whether an individual has engaged in vaginal intercourse. In this context, a person is considered a virgin until they have had sexual intercourse that involves penetration. This definition aligns with the more conventional view that emphasizes physical acts as the determining factor for virginity.
However, there are alternative perspectives that complicate this definition. Some argue that any form of sexual activity, including oral sex or manual stimulation, can affect one's virginity status. This view recognizes that sexual experiences are not limited to penetrative intercourse and that emotional and psychological dimensions also play a significant role in how individuals perceive their sexual identity. For instance, some might argue that engaging in sexual activities such as masturbation could impact one's virginity status, while others may disagree.
In Taiwan, the medical community tends to focus on sexual health and education, emphasizing the importance of understanding sexual behavior in a broader context. This includes recognizing the emotional and psychological aspects of sexual experiences, as well as the potential implications for health and well-being. The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan promotes comprehensive sexual education, which aims to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their sexual health.
Furthermore, the discourse surrounding virginity is often influenced by cultural and societal norms. In many cultures, virginity is tied to notions of purity, morality, and social expectations. These cultural factors can shape individual beliefs about virginity and influence how people perceive their own sexual experiences. In Taiwan, as in many societies, there is a growing recognition of the need to challenge traditional views on virginity and to promote a more inclusive understanding of sexual health that respects individual experiences and choices.
In conclusion, the definition of virginity within Taiwan's medical community is not monolithic and can vary based on individual beliefs, cultural influences, and the context of sexual activity. While traditional definitions focus on penetrative intercourse, there is a growing recognition of the need to consider a broader range of sexual experiences and their implications for health and identity. As society continues to evolve, so too will the conversations surrounding virginity, sexual health, and education, highlighting the importance of fostering open and respectful discussions about these topics.
