Swollen underarm?

I noticed some swelling in my armpit today while changing clothes.
It feels somewhat painful, but not too much.
However, the right side seems more swollen compared to the left.
What could this be? Should I see a dermatologist?

Hello Ms.
Ava,
Thank you for your message.
In response to your inquiry: the feeling of swelling in your right armpit, could it be related to your menstrual cycle? If the swelling and pain only occur before and after your menstruation, it may be associated with hormonal changes.
I recommend that you consult a breast surgeon.

Thank you for reaching out.

Sincerely,
Dr.

Swollen armpits can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical help. The swelling you are experiencing could be due to a variety of reasons, and it is essential to consider the accompanying symptoms and your medical history.

One common cause of swollen armpits is lymphadenopathy, which refers to the enlargement of lymph nodes. The lymph nodes in the armpit area can swell due to infections, such as bacterial or viral infections. For example, a common cold or flu can lead to swollen lymph nodes as your body fights off the infection. Additionally, localized infections, such as an abscess or a skin infection, can also cause swelling and tenderness in the armpit area.

Another potential cause could be an allergic reaction or irritation. If you have recently changed deodorants, soaps, or laundry detergents, your skin may react to these products, leading to inflammation and swelling. In some cases, insect bites or stings can also cause localized swelling.

In more serious cases, swollen armpits can be a sign of underlying medical conditions, such as autoimmune diseases or even certain cancers. Conditions like lymphoma or breast cancer can lead to swollen lymph nodes in the armpit area. However, these are less common and usually present with additional symptoms, such as unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or persistent fatigue.

Given that you mentioned the swelling is more pronounced on one side, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A dermatologist can evaluate your condition, especially if there are any skin changes, rashes, or signs of infection. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, order imaging studies or blood tests to determine the underlying cause of the swelling.

In summary, while swollen armpits can result from benign causes such as infections or allergic reactions, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the swelling persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, seeking medical attention is crucial. Early diagnosis and treatment can help address any underlying issues and alleviate your concerns.
