Prostate massage for prostatitis?
Hello Dr.
Lin, I previously visited a urology clinic for a test on my testicles, and they performed a series of examinations using ultrasound, which showed no issues.
The doctor also checked for any prostate problems and after a digital rectal examination, he diagnosed me with prostatitis and advised me to return for follow-up.
He prescribed several medications including TNYH (STROCAIN) OXETHAZAINE, TAMSULOSIN S.R., TAMSULOSIN HCL, REZOXIN TABLETS (CHLORZOXAZONE), CIPROGEN F.C.
TAB (CIPROFLOXACIN HCL), FOXATE F.C.
TABLET (FLAVOXATE HCL), and LEVOCIN F.C.
(LEVOFLOXACIN).
Each time I return for the massage treatment, I feel that he is quite vigorous, and I experience soreness, especially since I also have internal hemorrhoids.
Today was my third follow-up visit for the massage, and he mentioned that the inflammation has improved, but after the massage, I noticed some blood, which he said was from the hemorrhoids and not a cause for concern.
He also mentioned that for mild inflammation, about two to three follow-up visits would suffice, while for more severe cases, it could take five to six visits.
He assessed my condition as moderate to severe, indicating that I may need one or two more visits, having completed three so far.
I would like to ask Dr.
Lin if this treatment approach is appropriate, especially considering I also have a gastric ulcer for which he seems to have prescribed OXETHAZAINE.

Hello: Every physician has their own treatment methods.
If you have any questions, please visit a urology department at a hospital for a proper examination by a physician to confirm your condition.
This facility does not examine patients, so it is impossible to provide a diagnosis.
Without a diagnosis, treatment cannot be determined.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Prostate inflammation, commonly referred to as prostatitis, can be a complex condition that significantly impacts a patient's quality of life. Your experience with prostate inflammation and the treatment methods you've encountered raises several important points worth discussing, particularly regarding the use of massage therapy as part of the treatment regimen.
Understanding Prostate Inflammation
Prostatitis can manifest in various forms, including acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS), which is the most common form. Symptoms may include pelvic pain, urinary difficulties, and sexual dysfunction. In your case, the diagnosis of prostatitis was made following a digital rectal examination and ultrasound, which is a standard procedure for assessing prostate health.
The Role of Massage Therapy
Massage therapy, particularly prostate massage, is sometimes employed in the treatment of prostatitis. The rationale behind this approach is that massage may help relieve tension in the pelvic floor muscles, improve blood flow to the prostate, and facilitate the drainage of prostatic secretions. However, the effectiveness of this treatment can vary significantly from person to person.
1. Efficacy: While some patients report relief from symptoms following prostate massage, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited. Some studies suggest that it may help alleviate symptoms in certain cases of CPPS, but more research is needed to establish its overall efficacy.
2. Technique and Comfort: It is crucial that any massage performed is done gently and by a qualified healthcare professional. If you are experiencing significant discomfort or pain during the procedure, it may be worth discussing this with your doctor. Pain during or after the massage could indicate that the technique is too aggressive or that there are other underlying issues, such as your internal hemorrhoids.
3. Bleeding Concerns: The presence of blood following a massage raises concerns, especially given your history of hemorrhoids. While your doctor may attribute this to your hemorrhoids, it is essential to ensure that any bleeding is thoroughly evaluated to rule out other potential causes. If bleeding persists or worsens, you should seek further medical evaluation.
Medication Management
You mentioned being prescribed several medications, including Tamsulosin, Ciprofloxacin, and Oxethazaine. Each of these medications serves a specific purpose:
- Tamsulosin: This medication is an alpha-blocker that helps relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate.
- Ciprofloxacin: An antibiotic that may be prescribed if there is a bacterial component to your prostatitis.
- Oxethazaine: This is a local anesthetic that can help relieve pain associated with urinary tract irritation.
Given your history of gastric ulcers, it is crucial to monitor the use of any medications that may irritate the stomach lining. Always inform your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, including any gastrointestinal issues, to ensure that prescribed medications do not exacerbate these conditions.
Lifestyle and Dietary Considerations
In addition to medical treatment, lifestyle modifications can play a significant role in managing prostatitis symptoms. Here are some recommendations:
- Diet: Avoiding irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods can help reduce urinary symptoms. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may support overall health.
- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help dilute urine and reduce irritation.
- Physical Activity: Regular, gentle exercise can improve circulation and reduce pelvic tension.
Conclusion
In summary, while prostate massage may be a part of your treatment plan, it is essential to ensure that it is performed correctly and comfortably. The presence of blood should be addressed with your healthcare provider to rule out any complications. Additionally, managing your medications carefully, especially considering your gastric history, is crucial. Always maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any concerns you may have regarding your treatment plan. This collaborative approach will help ensure the best possible outcomes for your prostate health.
