Treatment for penile curvature?
Hello Doctor, I have a curvature of about 60 to 70 degrees in my erect penis.
After researching, I learned that a curvature greater than 60 degrees is considered severe and may not be suitable for the tunica albuginea plication technique for treatment.
However, I am unsure where in Taiwan I can find a physician who performs tissue grafting surgery.
I would also like to know the approximate cost of this procedure.
Thank you.

More Info
Penile curvature, particularly when it exceeds 60 degrees, can significantly impact sexual function and quality of life. In Taiwan, there are several treatment options available for this condition, including surgical interventions. The most common surgical procedures for severe penile curvature include the use of grafts or tissue flaps, which are often necessary when the curvature is pronounced and cannot be effectively treated with simpler techniques like the Nesbit procedure or plication techniques.
Treatment Options
1. Graft or Tissue Flap Surgery: This method involves the excision of the fibrous plaque causing the curvature and the subsequent grafting of tissue to restore a straightened penile shaft. This is particularly useful for patients with significant curvature (over 60 degrees) and is often performed when other methods are deemed ineffective.
2. Penile Prosthesis: In cases where curvature is accompanied by erectile dysfunction, a penile prosthesis may be considered. This involves the implantation of devices that can help achieve an erection while also correcting the curvature.
3. Plication Techniques: While these are generally more suitable for less severe curvatures, they can sometimes be adapted for moderate cases. However, as you mentioned, they are not typically recommended for severe curvature.
Costs
The costs for penile curvature surgery in Taiwan can vary widely depending on the complexity of the procedure, the surgeon's expertise, and the hospital's facilities. Generally, the costs can range from approximately NT$100,000 to NT$300,000 (around USD 3,300 to USD 10,000). This estimate includes pre-operative evaluations, the surgery itself, and post-operative care. However, it is essential to consult with specific medical facilities for precise pricing, as costs can differ significantly.
Finding a Surgeon
In Taiwan, many urologists specialize in penile surgeries, including those for curvature. Major medical centers in cities like Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung often have experienced urologists who perform these procedures. It is advisable to seek referrals from general practitioners or consult online medical directories to find qualified specialists. Additionally, many hospitals have dedicated urology departments that can provide information on the surgeons’ experience and success rates with these specific procedures.
Consultation
When considering surgery, it is crucial to have a thorough consultation with a urologist. During this consultation, you can discuss your specific condition, the severity of the curvature, and the most appropriate surgical options. The doctor will likely perform a physical examination and may request imaging studies to assess the extent of the curvature and any underlying conditions.
Conclusion
In summary, penile curvature exceeding 60 degrees typically requires surgical intervention, with grafting techniques being the most effective option. The costs can be substantial, and it is essential to consult with experienced urologists in reputable hospitals to discuss your options. If you are considering surgery, ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding of the procedure, potential risks, and expected outcomes. It is also beneficial to inquire about post-operative care and rehabilitation to ensure the best possible recovery and results.
