Post-Placement of Double J Stent Procedure
Hello, a few days ago I went to the hospital due to lower abdominal pain and was diagnosed with left ureteral obstruction, followed by the discovery of left ureteral stricture.
The doctor performed endoscopic surgery and placed a double J stent on the left side.
After the surgery, for two consecutive days, today is the third day.
Initially, I felt a painful pulling sensation in my bladder while urinating, and then my kidney also started to hurt significantly.
Upon consulting the doctor, I was informed that this is a normal phenomenon and advised to drink plenty of water (over 3000cc daily).
On the second day post-surgery, urination was still painful but tolerable, and the hospital informed me that I could be discharged.
On my way home, I noticed severe pain above my left abdomen while walking, and now my left flank has started to hurt and is accompanied by fever.
Should I return to the clinic immediately or take medication and observe for another day?

Hello: If your body temperature rises, indicating a fever, you should return for a follow-up.
If there is no fever, placing a double J stent may lead to various symptoms (you can look it up online, such as hematuria, dysuria, frequent urination, discomfort in the lower back, etc.), and you can observe the situation first.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
After undergoing a Double J stent placement due to left ureteral obstruction and subsequent narrowing, it is not uncommon to experience pain and discomfort in the days following the procedure. The symptoms you describe, including bladder pain during urination, renal pain, and now left abdominal and flank pain accompanied by fever, warrant careful consideration.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Postoperative Pain: It is typical to experience some degree of pain after the placement of a Double J stent. This can be due to the stent itself irritating the bladder and ureter, as well as the surgical manipulation of tissues during the procedure. The sensation of the bladder being "pulled" is often reported by patients and can be quite uncomfortable.
2. Renal Pain: Pain in the kidney area can occur if there is residual swelling or irritation from the stent placement. Additionally, if the stent is not positioned correctly, it can lead to increased pressure in the kidney, causing pain.
3. Fever: The presence of fever is concerning. While mild fever can occur postoperatively due to inflammation, a significant or persistent fever may indicate an infection, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or pyelonephritis (kidney infection).
Recommendations
Given your symptoms, here are some steps you should consider:
1. Immediate Medical Attention: Since you are experiencing significant left abdominal pain and fever, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. These symptoms could indicate a complication such as an infection or obstruction that may require further evaluation and treatment.
2. Hydration: Continue to drink plenty of fluids as advised by your physician. Staying well-hydrated can help flush out the urinary system and may alleviate some discomfort associated with the stent.
3. Pain Management: If you have been prescribed pain medication, take it as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can also be helpful, but consult your doctor before taking any new medications.
4. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If the pain worsens, if you develop chills, or if the fever persists, these are signs that you should seek immediate medical care.
5. Follow-Up Appointment: Ensure you have a follow-up appointment scheduled with your urologist. They may want to perform imaging studies or a urine analysis to check for complications.
Conclusion
In summary, while some discomfort is expected after a Double J stent placement, the combination of severe pain and fever is concerning and should not be ignored. It is crucial to contact your healthcare provider or return to the hospital to rule out any serious complications. Early intervention can prevent further issues and ensure that you receive the appropriate care to manage your symptoms effectively.
