Experiencing shortness of breath and discomfort in the chest area?

I would like to ask about the recent difficulty in breathing.
I often find myself needing to take two or three deep breaths before I can catch my breath, and sometimes I even feel a bit of discomfort around my heart.
I have a history of thyroid enlargement, but tests have shown no significant issues.
Last week, my neck seemed less swollen, but I'm unsure if the difficulty in breathing is causing it to swell again.
This situation has made me particularly irritable.
Recently, I visited a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who suggested that my past nasal allergies and congestion may have accumulated over time, leading to this condition.
He mentioned that if there is a significant blockage in my nose, I would need to take deep breaths through my mouth.
I would like to know if this is truly the only reason for my symptoms.
Which specialty should I consult to better understand my health condition? This issue has been ongoing since July.
Thank you for your response.

Ms.
Jessica: Hello, based on your description, the most likely conditions are thyroid or tracheal issues.
It is recommended that you take the time to visit a pulmonology department for an examination.

Experiencing shortness of breath and chest discomfort can be distressing and may stem from a variety of causes. Based on the symptoms you've described, including the sensation of not being able to catch your breath, discomfort in the chest area, and a history of thyroid enlargement, it is essential to consider both physical and psychological factors that could be contributing to your condition.

Firstly, shortness of breath (dyspnea) can arise from respiratory issues such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or allergies, particularly if you have a history of nasal allergies. Allergies can lead to nasal congestion, which may cause you to breathe through your mouth, potentially leading to a feeling of inadequate air intake. This can create a cycle of anxiety and discomfort, as you may become hyper-aware of your breathing, leading to further distress.

Additionally, your mention of thyroid enlargement (goiter) is significant. Thyroid issues can sometimes lead to compression of the trachea or esophagus, which may contribute to breathing difficulties. Although your recent tests have shown no significant problems, it is advisable to continue monitoring your thyroid function and any changes in size or symptoms.

The psychological aspect cannot be overlooked. Stress and anxiety can manifest physically, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, and even palpitations. You mentioned feeling irritable, which can be a sign of underlying anxiety or stress. It is not uncommon for individuals under stress to experience a heightened awareness of their bodily sensations, which can exacerbate feelings of discomfort.

Given your symptoms, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional who specializes in pulmonary medicine (chest medicine) to rule out any underlying respiratory conditions. They may conduct tests such as pulmonary function tests, chest X-rays, or even a CT scan if necessary. Additionally, a visit to an endocrinologist may be beneficial to evaluate your thyroid condition further.

If your symptoms are indeed linked to anxiety or stress, a mental health professional could provide strategies to manage these feelings. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety-related symptoms, including those affecting breathing.

In summary, your symptoms could be multifactorial, involving respiratory issues, thyroid conditions, and psychological stress. A comprehensive approach involving both physical examinations and mental health assessments will be crucial in identifying the root cause of your discomfort and developing an effective treatment plan. It's essential to communicate openly with your healthcare providers about all your symptoms and concerns to ensure a thorough evaluation and appropriate care.
