High myopia
Hello Doctor, I have myopia of -9.00 diopters in my left eye and -6.50 diopters in my right eye.
Yesterday, while jumping in place at home, I noticed a small shadow in my right eye that appears with the jumping motion, but it doesn't show up when I'm not jumping.
I had an eye examination in July, which revealed floaters, but my retina was fine.
I would like to ask if this situation could indicate a retinal tear.
Thank you, Doctor.

Hello: Is there a hole in the retina? Not necessarily, but please have regular check-ups.
Wishing you safety and health.

High myopia, or severe nearsightedness, is a condition that can lead to various ocular symptoms and complications, particularly concerning the retina. Your situation, where you experience a small black shadow in your right eye while jumping, raises some important considerations.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that high myopia can lead to structural changes in the eye, including elongation of the eyeball, which can increase the risk of retinal issues. The presence of floaters, or "flying spots," is common in individuals with high myopia, and they can be a result of vitreous changes or retinal thinning. However, the appearance of a new black shadow, especially one that correlates with specific movements like jumping, should not be taken lightly.
The fact that you have previously been diagnosed with floaters but had no retinal issues detected during your last examination in July is reassuring. However, the emergence of a new symptom, particularly one that is movement-related, could indicate a potential change in your retinal status. While it is possible that this shadow is related to the vitreous gel pulling away from the retina (a common occurrence in myopic eyes), it could also suggest the presence of a retinal tear or detachment, especially if the shadow is persistent or accompanied by flashes of light.
Given your history of high myopia and the recent development of this symptom, it is crucial to seek a comprehensive eye examination as soon as possible. An ophthalmologist can perform a thorough evaluation, including a dilated fundus examination and possibly imaging studies like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to assess the retina's condition more closely. Early detection of any retinal issues is vital, as timely intervention can prevent more severe complications, including vision loss.
In addition to the potential retinal concerns, it's also worth noting that high myopia can lead to other complications such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Regular eye examinations are essential for monitoring these risks, especially as you age or if you notice any new symptoms.
In summary, while the black shadow you are experiencing could be benign, it is essential to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional. Do not wait for the symptoms to worsen; proactive management is key in high myopia to maintain eye health and prevent complications. Always prioritize your eye health, and do not hesitate to reach out to your eye care provider for any new or concerning symptoms.
