Subcutaneous itching, feeling like something is moving?
Hello! For the past six months, I have been experiencing intermittent itching under my skin, feeling as if something is moving, but it only lasts for about ten seconds.
Initially, it was at night and localized to my abdomen, but now it sometimes occurs on my thighs, back, and arms, and even during the day, it has become more frequent.
I have never experienced this kind of itching before, and I am concerned if it could be a symptom of a parasitic infection from eating raw fish, such as widespread calcification from parasites.
Thank you for your response.

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to determine the issue.
If it is very concerning, please seek medical attention as soon as possible.
A proper examination is necessary to understand the problem and to determine how to address it.

Unexplained skin itching can indeed be concerning, especially when it feels like something is moving under the skin. Your symptoms, which include intermittent itching that has spread from your abdomen to your thighs and arms, could potentially be linked to several causes, including parasitic infections, but they are not limited to that.
Firstly, it is important to understand that itching (pruritus) can arise from a variety of sources. While parasitic infections, such as those caused by certain types of worms or skin parasites like scabies, can lead to itching, they are not the only culprits. Other common causes of itching include allergic reactions, skin conditions (like eczema or psoriasis), dry skin, and even systemic conditions such as liver or kidney disease.
In your case, the fact that the itching is intermittent and has spread to different areas of your body suggests that it may not be solely due to a localized infection. It is also worth noting that many parasitic infections do not typically cause a sensation of movement under the skin. Instead, they may lead to rashes, bumps, or other visible symptoms. If you are concerned about a parasitic infection due to consuming raw fish, it is important to consider the specific types of parasites associated with such consumption, such as Anisakis or certain types of flukes. These infections can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, but they may not always present with skin itching.
Additionally, the sensation of something moving under the skin could also be attributed to other factors, such as anxiety or stress, which can manifest as physical symptoms, including itching. It is also possible that you may be experiencing a form of neuropathic itch, where the nerves themselves are sending signals that cause the sensation of itching without any actual skin irritation.
Given the duration and nature of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A thorough examination, including a detailed medical history and possibly some laboratory tests, can help determine the underlying cause of your itching. If a parasitic infection is suspected, your doctor may recommend specific tests to identify any potential parasites in your system.
In the meantime, you can take some steps to alleviate your symptoms. Keeping your skin moisturized can help reduce dryness, which is a common cause of itching. Avoiding known irritants, such as harsh soaps or detergents, can also be beneficial. If the itching becomes severe or is accompanied by other symptoms such as rash, swelling, or fever, seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while your symptoms could potentially be related to a parasitic infection, they could also be due to a variety of other causes. A healthcare professional can provide a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment based on a comprehensive evaluation of your condition.
