I have some minor questions after the surgery and would like to ask?
1.
I had left-sided varicocele surgery a month ago.
Is it normal to still experience some pain in the testicle if I move around too much?
2.
The surgical wound has healed, but there are some short white thread ends protruding.
Will they absorb on their own? Is there a risk of infection?
3.
There is a hard lump when I press on the healed area.
Is this internal scarring, or could it be due to an infection from the thread ends? Do I need to return for a follow-up appointment? I am studying far from home, so it's quite a distance to travel.

Hello: 1) Postoperative pain is normal as long as it is not severe.
2) If you notice white thread-like structures, you should see a doctor, as this can occasionally happen.
3) It is common for the area under the wound to feel hard, but it will soften over time.
However, if it becomes swollen again and the skin turns red, you should seek medical attention.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing varicocele surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some discomfort and concerns regarding the healing process. Let's address your questions one by one.
1. Pain After Surgery: It is relatively normal to experience some pain or discomfort in the testicular area after varicocele surgery, especially if you engage in activities that involve significant movement or strain. The surgical site is still healing, and any excessive movement can lead to discomfort. However, if the pain is severe or worsening, it is essential to consult your surgeon to rule out any complications such as infection or hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels).
2. White Thread from the Incision: The appearance of white threads or sutures at the incision site can be concerning. If these are the ends of absorbable sutures, they may eventually dissolve on their own. However, if they are not absorbable, they may need to be removed by a healthcare professional. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge from the incision site, you should seek medical attention promptly.
3. Hard Lump at the Incision Site: The hard lump you feel when pressing on the healing area could be a normal part of the healing process, known as scar tissue or fibrosis. This is common after surgery as the body repairs itself. However, it can also indicate a potential complication, such as an infection or a seroma (a pocket of clear fluid that can develop after surgery). If the lump persists, grows, or is accompanied by pain or other symptoms, it is advisable to return to your surgeon for an evaluation.
Additional Considerations
- Follow-Up Appointments: Even if you are far from home, it is crucial to have follow-up appointments with your surgeon. They can assess your healing and address any concerns you may have. If traveling is difficult, consider reaching out to a local healthcare provider who can review your situation and provide guidance.
- Signs of Infection: Be vigilant for signs of infection, which can include fever, chills, increased pain, or discharge from the incision site. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
- Activity Restrictions: It is essential to follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding activity restrictions post-surgery. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or any activities that could strain the surgical site until you receive clearance from your healthcare provider.
- Pain Management: If you continue to experience pain, discuss pain management options with your doctor. They may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe medications to help manage your discomfort.
In conclusion, while some discomfort and concerns are normal after varicocele surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any doubts or experience worsening symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and recovery are paramount, and addressing any issues early can help prevent complications.
