Flashing Lights When Blinking: Eye Symptoms - Ophthalmology

Flashing lights during blinking?

Hello Doctor, two weeks ago I went to the hospital for a fundus examination because I noticed an increase in floaters.
At that time, my vision was fine (no myopia, some astigmatism in the left eye), and the retina appeared normal (an OCT was performed).
However, in the past few days, I have noticed that when I blink, my left eye experiences flashes of light, specifically two fixed light spots (these are less noticeable in bright outdoor settings or complete darkness).
This occurs every time I blink, and even when I only blink my right eye, I can still see it in my left eye.
Does this indicate that my retina is being pulled by the vitreous?

More Info

Flashing lights in the eyes, especially when blinking, can be a concerning symptom for many individuals, particularly those with a history of eye issues such as floaters or high myopia. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing flashes of light in your left eye when you blink, which occurs regardless of whether you blink with the left or right eye. This phenomenon can be attributed to several potential causes, and understanding these can help alleviate your concerns.

Potential Causes of Flashing Lights
1. Vitreous Detachment: In individuals with high myopia, the vitreous gel that fills the eye can become more prone to detachment from the retina. When this occurs, it can tug on the retina, causing flashes of light. This is often described as seeing "lightning streaks" or flashes when moving the eyes or blinking.

2. Retinal Issues: Although your recent eye examination showed no issues with the retina, it is essential to remain vigilant. Flashes of light can sometimes indicate retinal tears or detachments, especially if they are accompanied by new floaters or a shadow in your vision. Given your history of increased floaters, it is wise to monitor any changes closely.

3. Photopsia: This term refers to the perception of light that is not present in the environment. It can occur due to various reasons, including retinal irritation or stimulation of the photoreceptors in the retina. This can happen due to mechanical changes in the eye, such as those caused by vitreous traction.

4. Migraine Aura: Although you mentioned not having a history of migraines, some individuals experience visual disturbances, including flashes of light, as a form of aura even without a headache. This can be triggered by various factors, including stress or changes in lighting.

5. Dry Eyes or Eye Fatigue: Sometimes, dry eyes or fatigue can lead to temporary visual disturbances. If your eyes are not adequately lubricated, blinking can create sensations of light or flashes.

Recommendations
1. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a close eye on the frequency and intensity of the flashes. If they become more frequent, change in nature, or are accompanied by other symptoms like vision loss or new floaters, seek immediate medical attention.

2. Follow-Up with an Eye Specialist: Since you have a history of floaters and high myopia, it would be prudent to schedule a follow-up appointment with your ophthalmologist. They may recommend additional tests, such as a dilated eye exam or OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), to assess the vitreous and retina more thoroughly.

3. Avoid Eye Strain: Ensure you take regular breaks when using screens or reading to reduce eye fatigue, which can exacerbate symptoms.

4. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration can help maintain eye moisture and overall eye health.

5. Document Changes: Keep a journal of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their duration, and any associated activities. This information can be valuable for your eye care provider.

Conclusion
While flashing lights when blinking can be alarming, understanding the potential causes can help you manage your concerns. Given your history of eye issues, it is essential to remain vigilant and proactive about your eye health. Regular check-ups and open communication with your eye care provider will ensure that any changes in your vision are addressed promptly and appropriately. If you experience any new symptoms or significant changes, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
