A lump behind the ear?
Hello Doctor, I am sixteen years old.
One day I felt pain behind my left ear and kept touching it, resulting in a lump about one centimeter in size.
It doesn't hurt, but occasionally I feel a slight soreness, and it's not very hard.
A few days later, I noticed a lump about two centimeters in size behind my right ear.
It also doesn't hurt, has occasional soreness, but feels a bit harder than the first lump.
The first lump has been present for a week.
I haven't had a cold or any signs of inflammation.
Why did these lumps appear? Could it be related to my recent fatigue and late nights? I'm really worried it might be cancer.
Thank you, Doctor.

Hello, netizen: Usually, a lump behind the ear may be a lymph node, it could also just be an acne lesion, or it may be related to a localized infection.
Therefore, it is recommended to monitor the situation and improve sleep quality.

When it comes to lumps behind the ear, especially in teenagers, there are several potential causes that can be considered. Given your description of the lumps—one being about one centimeter and the other two centimeters, both being somewhat soft and occasionally tender but not painful—it’s important to approach this with a comprehensive understanding of what might be happening.
Firstly, the lumps you are experiencing could be lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that are part of the lymphatic system, which helps the body fight infections. They can become enlarged due to various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or even stress. In your case, since you mentioned that you have not experienced any cold or inflammatory symptoms, it is possible that these lymph nodes are reacting to something else, such as fatigue or stress, which can sometimes cause lymph nodes to swell.
Another possibility is that these lumps could be sebaceous cysts. These are non-cancerous lumps that can form under the skin when a sebaceous gland becomes blocked. They are usually painless and can vary in size. They can sometimes feel soft or firm, depending on their contents and the surrounding tissue.
In some cases, the lumps could be related to an infection, such as mastoiditis, which is an infection of the mastoid bone located just behind the ear. However, this condition typically presents with more severe symptoms, such as pain, fever, and swelling, which you have not mentioned.
It’s also worth noting that stress and lack of sleep can impact your immune system, making you more susceptible to infections or causing existing conditions to flare up. However, the presence of lumps without other symptoms is less likely to be directly caused by fatigue or sleep deprivation alone.
While the concern about cancer is understandable, especially at your age, it is important to remember that most lumps in young individuals are benign. However, it is crucial to monitor the lumps for any changes in size, shape, or associated symptoms such as pain, redness, or fever.
Given that the lumps have persisted for over a week without improvement, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests, such as an ultrasound, to get a better understanding of the lumps. They can also assess your overall health, including any signs of infection or other underlying conditions.
In summary, while there are several benign explanations for the lumps behind your ears, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate care. Remember, early intervention is key to addressing any health concerns effectively.
