Small spots on the inside of the lower lip that are not painful or itchy?

I have developed many small, raised spots on the inside of my lower lip.
They are not painful or itchy, and I can't really reach them with my tongue.
They don't seem to be blisters and won't burst.
This has been present for about two weeks without any changes.
I noticed them after accidentally biting my lip.
I am 27 years old and do not smoke, drink alcohol, or chew betel nut.
What could this be?

Alice, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/09/18

Dr. Li Jiaxuan reply Otolaryngology

It may be inflammation and swelling of the minor salivary glands (since it is not diagnosed in person).
It is recommended to visit an otolaryngology clinic for consultation.
Wishing you good health.

The small bumps you are experiencing inside your lower lip can be concerning, especially when they persist for a couple of weeks without any pain or itching. Based on your description, these bumps may be a few different things, but they are most likely benign conditions.

One possibility is that these small bumps are mucoceles, which are fluid-filled cysts that can occur when a salivary gland duct is blocked or damaged. They often appear as small, painless bumps and can vary in size. Mucoceles are common and usually resolve on their own without treatment. They can occur due to trauma, such as biting your lip, which aligns with your mention of having bitten your mouth previously.

Another possibility could be Fordyce spots, which are small, painless, pale bumps that are actually sebaceous glands without hair follicles. They are completely normal and harmless, often appearing on the lips and inside the mouth. These spots do not require any treatment and are simply a variation of normal anatomy.

Additionally, the bumps could be related to oral lichen planus, a chronic inflammatory condition that can cause white patches or bumps in the mouth. However, this condition typically presents with other symptoms, such as soreness or discomfort, which you have not reported.

Given that you have not experienced any pain, itching, or changes in the appearance of the bumps, it is less likely that they are a sign of a serious condition. However, it is important to monitor the bumps for any changes, such as increased size, pain, or bleeding. If they persist or if you develop additional symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a dentist or an oral specialist, for a thorough examination.

In terms of treatment, if the bumps are indeed mucoceles or Fordyce spots, no treatment is necessary unless they become bothersome. Maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding any habits that could irritate the area, such as biting your lip, can help prevent further issues. If you are concerned about the appearance or persistence of these bumps, a healthcare provider can offer reassurance and discuss potential treatment options if needed.

In conclusion, while the small bumps inside your lower lip are likely benign, it is always best to err on the side of caution. If you have any doubts or if the situation changes, seeking professional advice is the best course of action. Regular dental check-ups can also help in identifying and addressing any oral health concerns early on.
