Irregular menstruation?

Hello, doctor.
I have been experiencing menstrual periods every week for over a month now, with each lasting about three to four days.
The flow is neither heavy nor light.
Previously, the blood was bright red, but yesterday it suddenly changed to a darker red.
After about three days, it ended and then started again.
I have never had this kind of situation before; my periods have always been regular, though they sometimes arrive a few days late.
Additionally, I have been trying to lose weight, doing jump rope for about five days a week, with each session consisting of approximately 1500 to 2000 jumps.
My food intake has decreased, but I still exceed my basal metabolic rate.
I am currently abroad and unable to seek medical attention.
Could you please advise me on what this issue might be? Thank you.

Zhen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/09/19

Irregular menstrual cycles can be concerning for many women, and understanding the potential causes is essential for addressing any underlying issues. Based on your description, it appears that you are experiencing a significant change in your menstrual pattern, with periods occurring weekly for over a month, lasting three to four days each time, and varying in color. This is indeed a departure from your previous regular cycles, which can be attributed to several factors.

Firstly, hormonal fluctuations are one of the most common reasons for irregular menstrual cycles. Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone play crucial roles in regulating the menstrual cycle. Any changes in these hormone levels can lead to alterations in your cycle. Factors that can influence hormone levels include stress, significant weight loss or gain, changes in physical activity, and dietary habits. In your case, you mentioned that you have been on a weight loss journey and have increased your physical activity significantly by incorporating jump rope exercises. Rapid weight loss and intense exercise can lead to hormonal imbalances, which may explain the irregularity in your menstrual cycle.

Additionally, stress is another critical factor that can affect menstrual cycles. If you are experiencing stress related to your lifestyle changes, being in a foreign country, or any other personal issues, this could also contribute to the irregularity. The body can react to stress by altering hormone production, which may lead to changes in your menstrual cycle.

Another consideration is the possibility of underlying medical conditions. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or uterine abnormalities can lead to irregular periods. While you mentioned that your previous cycles were normal, the sudden change could indicate that it’s worth monitoring your symptoms closely. If you experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, excessive bleeding, or other unusual signs, it would be advisable to seek medical attention when possible.

In terms of the color of your menstrual blood, it can vary throughout your cycle. Dark red blood often indicates older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus, while bright red blood is typically fresher. Variations in color can be normal, but if you notice significant changes or if the blood becomes very dark or has an unusual odor, it may warrant further investigation.

Given that you are currently unable to see a healthcare provider, it is essential to keep track of your menstrual cycles, noting any additional symptoms or changes. Maintaining a journal can help you identify patterns and provide valuable information to a healthcare provider when you are able to seek medical advice.

In summary, the irregular menstrual cycles you are experiencing could be due to hormonal changes related to weight loss, increased physical activity, or stress. While these factors are common, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice when possible, especially if the irregularities persist or worsen. Taking care of your overall health, managing stress, and ensuring a balanced diet can also help regulate your menstrual cycle.
