Bowel issues?
Hello, I am a freshman, 18 years old, and I have some concerns about my bowel movements that I would like to ask you about.
1.
Yesterday, I noticed some white substances on my stool that looked a bit like mold (I think I may have experienced this a long time ago as well), and I also noticed fresh blood when wiping (but I didn't feel any pain in my anus at that time).
However, today there is still some of the white substance.
2.
For the past two nights, I have felt something unusual in my intestines before going to sleep (similar to the urge to have a bowel movement) (I have been feeling anxious and staying up late recently).
Thank you.

Hello: 1.
Sometimes, hard stools can lead to the shedding of intestinal mucosa or mucus, resulting in a white appearance.
Most fresh blood is caused by anal fissures or hemorrhoids; however, if there is a large amount of bleeding or if it occurs frequently, it is advisable to seek medical attention from a gastroenterologist or a colorectal specialist.
2.
The sensation of urgency and incomplete evacuation may be due to rapid intestinal motility, which can be influenced by emotions, or the presence of retained stool.

When experiencing unusual bowel movements, such as the presence of a white substance and blood in the stool, it is essential to consider various potential causes. The symptoms you described—seeing a white, possibly mucus-like substance on your stool and noticing blood during wiping—can be indicative of several gastrointestinal issues.
Firstly, the white substance you observed could be mucus. Mucus is a normal secretion in the intestines that helps to lubricate the stool and facilitate its passage. However, an increase in mucus can sometimes indicate irritation or inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or infections can lead to increased mucus production.
The presence of blood in your stool, especially if it is bright red, often points to issues in the lower gastrointestinal tract, such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or more serious conditions like diverticulitis or colorectal cancer. Given that you mentioned not experiencing pain during bowel movements, hemorrhoids or anal fissures are likely candidates, as these conditions can cause bleeding without significant discomfort, especially if the bleeding is minor.
Your mention of feeling "weird" in your intestines before bed could be related to anxiety or stress, which can significantly affect gastrointestinal function. Stress can lead to changes in bowel habits, including increased urgency or discomfort. This is often referred to as "nervous stomach" and can manifest as a feeling of needing to have a bowel movement without actually producing one.
It is important to note that while occasional blood in the stool can be benign, especially if associated with hemorrhoids or minor fissures, persistent or recurrent symptoms warrant further investigation. If you continue to notice blood or if the symptoms worsen, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. A gastroenterologist can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, stool tests, and possibly a colonoscopy to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to benign conditions such as hemorrhoids or stress-induced changes in bowel habits, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any additional symptoms such as significant pain, changes in bowel habits, weight loss, or persistent blood in the stool, seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing any potential gastrointestinal issues effectively.
