After undergoing rubber band ligation for internal hemorrhoids, is it safe to exercise?
I underwent a hemorrhoid ligation procedure for internal hemorrhoids on September 23rd.
I felt a bit uncomfortable for the first couple of hours after the surgery, but afterwards, my bowel movements have been very smooth without any issues.
Since I regularly engage in strength training and some aerobic exercises, I would like to know if I can continue these activities.
If not, how many days should I wait before I can start exercising again?

After undergoing rubber band ligation for internal hemorrhoids, it is crucial to prioritize your recovery while considering your desire to return to exercise. Rubber band ligation is a minimally invasive procedure that effectively treats hemorrhoids by cutting off blood supply to the hemorrhoidal tissue, causing it to shrink and eventually fall off. While the procedure is generally safe and effective, it does require a period of recovery during which certain activities should be avoided.
In your case, since the procedure was performed on September 23, and you are already experiencing a smooth recovery with no significant discomfort, it is understandable that you are eager to return to your regular exercise routine. However, it is essential to adhere to your physician's recommendations regarding post-operative care and activity restrictions.
Typically, after rubber band ligation, doctors advise patients to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise for at least one to two weeks. This precaution helps prevent complications such as bleeding, pain, or exacerbation of the hemorrhoidal condition. Since your doctor has specifically mentioned avoiding intense exercise for three weeks, it is advisable to follow this guideline closely.
During the initial recovery phase, you can engage in light activities such as walking, which promotes circulation and aids in healing without putting undue strain on your body. Walking is a low-impact exercise that can help maintain your fitness level while allowing your body to recover from the procedure.
As for your question about specific exercises like core workouts or push-ups, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider before resuming these activities. While upper body exercises may seem less likely to affect your recovery, they can still increase intra-abdominal pressure, which might not be advisable during the early stages of healing. Swimming, on the other hand, is often considered a gentle form of exercise that can be resumed sooner, provided you feel comfortable and have no complications.
In summary, while your eagerness to return to exercise is understandable, it is crucial to prioritize your recovery and adhere to your doctor's recommendations. After three weeks, if you feel well and have no complications, you may gradually reintroduce more strenuous activities. Always listen to your body and consult your physician if you have any concerns or experience any discomfort during your recovery process. Remember, a gradual return to exercise will help ensure a successful recovery and minimize the risk of complications.
