There is a hard lump in the armpit?

Hello, Doctor: A few days ago, I noticed some pain in my armpit and found a hard lump that seems to be raised from the skin.
The area is slightly red and swollen, and the diameter is about 1.5 centimeters.
Today, it no longer hurts, but the lump still feels quite firm and is not movable.
It is located in the upper right part of my armpit (partially in the area with hair, about one-quarter of it is within the hair area).
I am a bit worried and unsure whether I should go to a hospital or clinic for evaluation.
Thank you.

It might just be folliculitis; it's advisable to monitor the situation.

When it comes to hard lumps in the armpit, it's essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention. The presence of a hard lump, especially if it is painful, red, or swollen, can be concerning. In your case, you mentioned that the lump is approximately 1.5 cm in diameter, has a hard texture, and was initially painful but is no longer causing discomfort.
There are several possible explanations for a hard lump in the armpit. One common cause is a swollen lymph node. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections, inflammation, or even malignancies. Infections, particularly those related to the skin or breast, can lead to localized lymphadenopathy. Other potential causes include cysts, lipomas (benign fatty tumors), or even more serious conditions like lymphoma or breast cancer.

Given that the lump is hard, non-mobile, and located in an area where lymph nodes are present, it is prudent to monitor it closely. If the lump persists for more than a couple of weeks, increases in size, or if you experience additional symptoms such as fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or changes in your breast tissue, you should seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of when to see a doctor, the general recommendation is to consult a healthcare provider if:
1. The lump persists for more than two weeks.

2. It grows in size or changes in shape.

3. You experience additional symptoms such as fever, chills, or unexplained weight loss.

4. You have a history of cancer or other significant health issues.

During your visit, the doctor may perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the lump further. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to determine the nature of the lump, especially if there is a concern for malignancy.

In summary, while many lumps in the armpit can be benign, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult a healthcare provider if you have any concerns. Early evaluation can lead to timely diagnosis and treatment if necessary. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body.
