Glans eczema
Hello, doctor.
I have seen other patients with similar issues regarding glans eczema and its management.
Recently, due to the season and my military service, I have experienced a recurrence of eczema on the inner thighs.
Initially, I used talcum powder to keep the area dry and relieve itching, allowing the eczema to resolve on its own.
Later, I purchased an antifungal cream called "Zhijunhao" from the pharmacy and applied it.
The eczema on my thighs has noticeably improved, but now I am experiencing redness and itching on the glans and foreskin.
There are small red spots above the meatus.
After cleaning the area, I applied the cream lightly, but I am still very uncomfortable.

Hello: Due to the weather, many people are experiencing this issue.
Drink plenty of water, and try to keep the area well-ventilated and dry.
Wear loose-fitting underwear.
If there is no discharge or redness, there is no need to use ointments.
However, if you experience pain during urination or if there are any skin abrasions, you should seek medical attention.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Understanding and managing glans eczema, also known as penile eczema, requires a comprehensive approach that includes recognizing symptoms, identifying potential triggers, and implementing appropriate treatments.
Symptoms of Glans Eczema
Glans eczema can manifest through various symptoms, which may include:
1. Redness and Inflammation: The glans (the head of the penis) may appear red and swollen.
2. Itching and Discomfort: Patients often experience intense itching, which can lead to scratching and further irritation.
3. Dryness and Flaking: The skin may become dry, flaky, or scaly, which can be uncomfortable.
4. Rash: Small red bumps or patches may develop, sometimes accompanied by oozing or crusting if the skin is scratched excessively.
5. Burning Sensation: Some individuals report a burning feeling, especially after urination or exposure to irritants.
Causes and Triggers
Glans eczema can be triggered by various factors, including:
- Irritants: Soaps, detergents, and personal care products can irritate sensitive skin.
- Allergens: Certain materials, such as latex in condoms or certain fabrics, may provoke an allergic reaction.
- Moisture: Excessive moisture from sweating or inadequate drying after bathing can exacerbate the condition.
- Friction: Activities that cause friction, such as vigorous sexual activity or tight clothing, can worsen symptoms.
- Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or contact dermatitis may also contribute to the development of eczema.
Treatment Options
1. Topical Corticosteroids: These are often the first line of treatment for reducing inflammation and itching. Mild to moderate strength corticosteroids can be applied to the affected area as directed by a healthcare provider.
2. Emollients and Moisturizers: Regular use of emollients can help maintain skin hydration and barrier function. Look for fragrance-free products to avoid further irritation.
3. Antihistamines: Oral antihistamines may help alleviate itching, especially if it disrupts sleep.
4. Avoiding Triggers: Identifying and avoiding known irritants or allergens is crucial. This may involve switching to hypoallergenic personal care products and wearing loose-fitting, breathable clothing.
5. Antifungal Creams: If there is a suspicion of a secondary fungal infection, antifungal creams may be prescribed.
6. Proper Hygiene: Gentle cleansing with mild soap and ensuring the area is thoroughly dried after washing can help prevent irritation.
7. Consultation with a Dermatologist: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult a dermatologist for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan.
Lifestyle Modifications
- Clothing Choices: Opt for loose-fitting underwear made from breathable fabrics like cotton to reduce moisture and friction.
- Hygiene Practices: Maintain good hygiene by washing the area with mild soap and water, and ensure it is dried properly.
- Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate eczema symptoms, so incorporating stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness or yoga may be beneficial.
Conclusion
Managing glans eczema involves a combination of recognizing symptoms, avoiding triggers, and implementing appropriate treatments. If over-the-counter treatments do not provide relief, or if the condition worsens, seeking medical advice is crucial. A healthcare provider can offer a tailored approach to effectively manage the symptoms and improve quality of life.
