Medical Inquiry about Varicose Veins
Hello, doctor.
About 4 to 5 years ago, I experienced dull pain in my left testicle and abdomen.
I sought medical attention at various hospitals in Hsinchu, including National Taiwan University Hospital (Hsinchu), National Taiwan University Hospital (Zhudong), Mackay Memorial Hospital, and Tung's Taichung Metro Harbor Hospital.
I was diagnosed with mild varicocele.
At that time, I thought it wasn't a major issue, so I left it untreated.
However, the pain has been increasing recently, and I experience discomfort whether I'm standing, sitting, or lying down.
I would like to explore surgical options for improvement.
I have the following questions: 1.
What are the current surgical methods, the duration of the surgery, and the recovery time? 2.
Can you recommend a specialized physician at a nearby hospital in Hsinchu? (I heard that if the surgery is not done well, it may require a second operation.) Thank you!

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology
Mild varicocele should not be that serious.
However, it is important to clarify the underlying cause, as well as the surgical methods, timing of the surgery, and recovery time.
These questions should be directed to the surgeon, as it is not convenient for me to recommend a specialist.
I apologize.

More Info
Varicocele is a condition characterized by the enlargement of veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins that occur in the legs. It can lead to discomfort, pain, and even fertility issues in some cases. Given your history of left-sided testicular and abdominal pain, along with the diagnosis of mild varicocele, it’s understandable that you are seeking surgical intervention, especially since your symptoms have worsened.
1. Current Surgical Options, Duration, and Recovery
There are several surgical options available for treating varicocele, and the choice often depends on the severity of the condition, the presence of symptoms, and the patient's overall health. The most common surgical procedures include:
- Open Surgery (Varicocelectomy): This traditional method involves making an incision in the groin or abdomen to access the affected veins. The surgeon ties off the enlarged veins to redirect blood flow to healthier veins. The procedure typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, and recovery can take several weeks, with most patients returning to normal activities within 2 to 4 weeks.
- Laparoscopic Surgery: This minimally invasive technique involves making small incisions and using a camera to guide the surgery. It generally results in less postoperative pain and quicker recovery compared to open surgery. The procedure usually lasts about 1 to 2 hours, and many patients can return to normal activities within a week or two.
- Percutaneous Embolization: This is a non-surgical option where a radiologist uses imaging guidance to insert a catheter into the affected vein and block it with coils or a special solution. This method is less invasive and typically has a shorter recovery time, often allowing patients to resume normal activities within a few days.
2. Recommendations for Specialists in Hsinchu
When seeking a specialist for varicocele treatment, it’s essential to find a urologist with experience in managing this condition. You can consider reaching out to the following hospitals in Hsinchu, which are known for their urology departments:
- Hsinchu Mackay Memorial Hospital: Known for its comprehensive urology services and experienced staff.
- National Taiwan University Hospital (Hsinchu Branch): This hospital has a reputable urology department with specialists who are well-versed in treating varicocele.
- Cheng Hsin General Hospital: They have a good reputation for surgical procedures and patient care.
It’s advisable to consult with a urologist who can evaluate your specific case, discuss the best surgical option for you, and address any concerns about the potential need for reoperation.
Additional Considerations
While surgery can significantly alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life, it’s important to discuss the risks and benefits with your surgeon. Complications, although rare, can include infection, bleeding, or recurrence of varicocele. Postoperative care is crucial; following your surgeon's instructions regarding activity restrictions and follow-up appointments will aid in a smooth recovery.
In conclusion, varicocele surgery can provide relief from pain and improve fertility outcomes if necessary. With the right surgical approach and a skilled surgeon, you can expect a positive outcome. Be sure to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns to ensure the best possible care.
