Is it normal for hemorrhoid surgery to trigger a myocardial infarction?
Hello Doctor: My sister underwent hemorrhoid surgery at a legitimate hospital on the morning of October 6th.
On the evening of October 7th, around 11 PM, she fainted in the bathroom while using the toilet and briefly had no blood pressure or heartbeat.
The doctor said it was a myocardial infarction and that she needed to undergo cardiac catheterization immediately.
I would like to ask why hemorrhoid surgery could trigger a myocardial infarction.
Is this considered a normal complication, or could it be due to medical negligence? (My sister is 26 years old and only has severe anemia with no other health issues.) I have never heard that hemorrhoid surgery could be so dangerous; we almost lost a family member!

Hello: In theory, observing moles should not lead to a myocardial infarction.
A comprehensive understanding of all issues is necessary before making a diagnosis.

It's understandable to be concerned about the health of a loved one, especially when a seemingly routine procedure like hemorrhoid surgery leads to a serious complication such as a heart attack. While it is not common for hemorrhoid surgery to directly trigger a heart attack, there are several factors that could contribute to such an event.
First, it’s important to recognize that any surgical procedure, regardless of how minor it may seem, carries inherent risks. These risks can include complications related to anesthesia, blood loss, and stress on the body. In your sister's case, the surgery may have induced physiological stress that could potentially exacerbate underlying health issues, even if she appeared healthy prior to the operation.
Your sister's history of severe anemia is particularly relevant. Anemia can lead to reduced oxygen delivery to tissues, including the heart. If her hemoglobin levels were significantly low, her heart would have to work harder to pump blood, which could increase the risk of cardiac events, especially under the stress of surgery. Additionally, if she experienced significant blood loss during or after the procedure, this could further compromise her cardiovascular stability.
Another factor to consider is the potential for dehydration or electrolyte imbalances, which can occur after surgery, particularly if there was a significant loss of blood or fluids. These imbalances can lead to arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) or other cardiac issues, which could precipitate a heart attack.
Furthermore, the stress response to surgery can elevate heart rates and blood pressure, which may strain the cardiovascular system, particularly in individuals who may have undiagnosed heart conditions. Although your sister is young and seemingly healthy, it is possible for individuals to have underlying conditions that may not have been previously identified, such as coronary artery disease or other structural heart issues.
Regarding whether this situation constitutes a normal complication or a medical error, it is essential to understand that while complications can occur, they should be rare and ideally preventable. Medical professionals are trained to assess risks before surgery and to monitor patients closely during and after procedures. If your sister's medical team did not adequately evaluate her risk factors or if there were lapses in monitoring her condition post-surgery, this could raise concerns about the standard of care provided.
In conclusion, while it is not typical for hemorrhoid surgery to lead to a heart attack, various factors, including your sister's anemia and the stress of surgery, may have contributed to her cardiac event. It is crucial to discuss these concerns with her healthcare providers, who can provide more insight into her specific case and the events surrounding her surgery. They can also help determine if further investigation into her cardiovascular health is warranted to prevent future complications.
