Laser treatment for viral warts?

Hello Dr.
Wu, in May I underwent a nitrogen laser treatment at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, primarily on the soles of both feet.
Why did the wounds become keratinized after healing, and by September, those keratinized areas turned into viral warts? It feels like the nitrogen laser treatment I had was in vain (the surgery cost nearly 20,000 TWD for both feet).
Could this be an issue with my immune system? I have read some articles suggesting that consuming Job's tears can boost immunity against viral warts.
Besides Job's tears, can vitamin C or B vitamins also enhance immunity to resist viral warts?

Mr. Lin, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/10/09

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

Consuming Job's tears may boost immunity against viral warts, but this is considered a folk remedy and its efficacy is uncertain.
It is still advisable to seek treatment at a hospital or clinic.

Laser treatment, particularly CO2 laser therapy, is a common approach for managing viral warts, including those caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). While this treatment can effectively remove visible warts, it does not address the underlying viral infection, which can lead to recurrence. Your experience of developing keratinized areas that subsequently transformed back into warts suggests that the HPV may still be present in the skin, and your immune system may not be effectively controlling the virus.

The immune system plays a crucial role in managing viral infections, including HPV. A robust immune response can help suppress the virus, potentially preventing the formation of new warts. Factors that can influence immune function include overall health, nutrition, stress levels, and underlying medical conditions.
In terms of dietary interventions, certain nutrients are known to support immune health. For example, vitamin C is well-regarded for its role in immune function, as it helps stimulate the production of white blood cells and acts as an antioxidant. Vitamin B6 and B12 are also important for maintaining a healthy immune response. While consuming foods rich in these vitamins can be beneficial, it's essential to approach them as part of a balanced diet rather than relying solely on them for immune enhancement.

Regarding the use of coix seed (薏仁), it is often touted in traditional medicine for its purported health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties. While some anecdotal evidence suggests that it may help improve immune function, scientific research supporting these claims is limited. Therefore, while incorporating coix seed into your diet may be beneficial, it should not replace conventional medical treatments or therapies.

If you are experiencing recurrent warts, it may be worthwhile to consult with a healthcare provider about your immune status. They may suggest tests to evaluate your immune function or recommend additional treatments that could help manage the HPV infection more effectively. Options may include topical immune modulators like imiquimod, which can stimulate the immune response at the site of the warts, or other treatments that target the virus more directly.

In summary, while laser treatment can be effective for removing warts, it does not eliminate the virus itself. A well-functioning immune system is essential for controlling HPV, and dietary choices can support immune health. However, it is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider regarding your treatment options and any concerns about your immune function.
