Salivary gland issues?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask a question.
I previously had a problem with salivary gland (submandibular gland) obstruction, so I am being more cautious.
Yesterday, while washing my hair, some shampoo accidentally flowed into my mouth, but I didn't spit it out immediately and rinsed my mouth only after finishing.
Will this affect my submandibular gland? Could it cause an obstruction? Since I have had obstruction issues before and underwent a minor surgery, I would like to know if situations like this could lead to an obstruction.
Thank you for your response.

Hello: Generally, this will not cause obstruction.
Wishing you peace and good health.

When it comes to concerns about salivary gland blockage, particularly after exposure to shampoo or other hair products, it's important to understand the anatomy and physiology of the salivary glands, as well as the potential effects of foreign substances entering the oral cavity.

The submandibular glands, which are located beneath the jaw, are responsible for producing saliva that aids in digestion and oral health. Blockages in these glands can occur due to various reasons, including the presence of stones (sialolithiasis), inflammation, or infection. Given your history of submandibular gland blockage and previous surgery, it is understandable that you are cautious about anything that might affect your salivary glands.

In the scenario you described, where shampoo inadvertently flowed into your mouth during washing, the immediate concern would be the ingredients in the shampoo. Most shampoos contain a variety of chemicals, including surfactants, fragrances, and preservatives, which are generally not meant for ingestion. However, the amount that might have entered your mouth during the washing process is likely minimal and would typically be diluted by saliva and other fluids in the mouth.

The likelihood of shampoo causing a blockage in the submandibular gland is low, especially if you rinsed your mouth afterward. Salivary glands are designed to handle various substances that enter the oral cavity, and while exposure to irritants can cause temporary discomfort or inflammation, it does not usually lead to blockage. However, if the shampoo contained particularly irritating or caustic ingredients, it could potentially lead to inflammation of the salivary glands, which might cause temporary swelling or discomfort.

If you experience any symptoms such as pain, swelling, or difficulty swallowing after this incident, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend monitoring your symptoms or conducting an examination to ensure that there are no underlying issues, especially considering your previous history of gland blockage.

In summary, while it is prudent to be cautious given your past issues with salivary gland blockage, the accidental ingestion of a small amount of shampoo during washing is unlikely to cause a blockage in the submandibular gland. However, if you have any concerns or experience unusual symptoms, seeking medical advice would be the best course of action. Always remember to read the labels of personal care products and avoid ingesting them whenever possible to minimize any risk to your health.
