What is the likelihood of getting pregnant in this situation?

Hello doctor, I got my period on September 10th, and on September 16th, towards the end of my period, I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend.
At first, he didn't use a condom and was rubbing against me outside the vagina, and his tip may have entered a little bit.
He then put on a condom.
Since then, I've been very anxious about the possibility of pregnancy due to the initial unprotected contact.
I was under a lot of stress, and when my period was due on October 10th, it didn't arrive.
On October 20th, I used the first morning urine to take a pregnancy test.
Initially, there was only one line, but after about 1 to 2 hours, a very faint second line appeared, so faint that I had to look closely to see it.
What is the likelihood that I am pregnant? Also, today I started noticing some brown discharge, and I'm unsure if this is my period.
Could you please help me with this? Thank you!

When it comes to understanding the chances of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, especially in the context you've described, it's important to consider several factors. Based on your timeline, you had your last menstrual period starting on September 10 and engaged in sexual activity on September 16, which was towards the end of your menstrual cycle. The fact that your partner initially did not use a condom raises concerns about the possibility of sperm entering the vagina, even if only slightly.

The menstrual cycle typically lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation usually occurs around 14 days before the start of your next period. If your cycle is regular and you have a 28-day cycle, ovulation would likely occur around September 24. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that if you ovulated around that time, there is a possibility of pregnancy from the intercourse on September 16.

Regarding your pregnancy test on October 20, the appearance of a very faint second line can be indicative of a positive result, but it is essential to consider the timing. If you tested too early, it may not have registered enough hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine to produce a strong positive result. It is generally recommended to wait until at least the first day of your missed period for the most accurate results. Since your period was due on October 10 and you tested ten days later, it is possible that you are indeed pregnant, but the faint line suggests that the hCG levels may still be low.

The presence of brown discharge can be concerning, but it is not uncommon in early pregnancy. Brown discharge often indicates old blood, which can occur during implantation bleeding or as a result of hormonal changes in early pregnancy. However, it can also be a sign of an impending period. If the discharge becomes heavier or is accompanied by pain, it is advisable to seek medical attention.

To summarize, while there is a possibility of pregnancy based on the timing of your sexual activity and the faint positive test result, the brown discharge complicates the picture. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and consider taking another pregnancy test in a few days for a clearer result. If you continue to experience anxiety or have further concerns, consulting with a healthcare provider can provide reassurance and guidance tailored to your specific situation. They may recommend a blood test for pregnancy, which can detect lower levels of hCG than urine tests and provide a more definitive answer.
