Voice change
Hello, doctor.
I have been in the habit of pressing on my throat while speaking since middle school.
I wonder if this has affected my voice change during puberty, as my current voice is quite similar to what it was before the voice change.
Is there any way to make my voice sound like a typical male voice? Would injecting male hormones help remedy this? Or are there any surgical options available to address this issue?

Voice changes during adolescence can be a significant concern for many individuals, especially when the expected changes do not occur as anticipated. In your case, it seems that you have developed a habit of speaking with tension in your throat, which may have contributed to your voice not maturing as it typically would during puberty. This situation can lead to feelings of self-consciousness and social anxiety, particularly when comparing your voice to those of your peers.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that voice changes are a natural part of development, influenced by various factors, including hormonal changes, vocal cord structure, and individual anatomy. In males, the voice typically deepens during puberty due to the growth of the larynx and the lengthening of the vocal cords, which is primarily driven by testosterone. If you feel that your voice has not changed significantly, it may be worth consulting with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or a laryngologist who can assess your vocal cords and overall vocal health.
Regarding your question about testosterone injections or surgical options, it is crucial to approach this matter with caution. Testosterone therapy can indeed promote the development of secondary sexual characteristics, including voice deepening, but it is typically reserved for individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria or other medical conditions that warrant hormone therapy. If you are considering this route, it is essential to have a thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider who specializes in hormone therapy to discuss the potential benefits and risks.
Surgical options, such as vocal cord surgery, are also available but are generally considered only after a comprehensive assessment and when other non-invasive methods have been exhausted. Surgical interventions can carry risks and may not guarantee the desired outcome. Therefore, it is vital to have realistic expectations and to explore less invasive options first.
One of the most effective ways to improve your vocal quality is through voice therapy. Working with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in voice can help you develop healthier speaking habits and techniques. They can guide you in reducing throat tension and using your voice more efficiently, which may lead to a more mature sound over time. Voice therapy often includes exercises to strengthen the vocal cords, improve breath support, and enhance resonance.
Additionally, practicing good vocal hygiene is essential. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding excessive throat clearing, and not straining your voice. If you find yourself pressing down on your throat to speak, it may be beneficial to consciously relax your throat and use your diaphragm for support instead. This can help alleviate discomfort and promote a healthier vocal quality.
In summary, while there are options available, including hormone therapy and surgical interventions, it is crucial to consult with qualified healthcare professionals to explore these avenues. Voice therapy with a trained SLP can provide you with the tools to improve your vocal quality in a safe and effective manner. Remember, everyone's voice is unique, and with the right support and techniques, you can work towards achieving a voice that feels comfortable and confident for you.
