Lip urticaria

I have had hives several times in the past, mostly around my eyes.
A couple of days ago, I woke up with swollen red lips and thought it would go away on its own after a few days.
Today, I noticed many small raised bumps on the inner sides of my upper and lower lips that look like hives.
I would like to ask the doctor if this is hives.

Ning, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/10/28

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to determine the issue.
If it is very concerning, please seek medical attention as it is necessary to be evaluated in order to understand the problem.

More Info

Lip hives, also known as urticaria, can indeed manifest as red, swollen areas on the lips, along with small raised bumps that resemble mosquito bites. This condition can be quite uncomfortable and may cause concern, especially when it appears suddenly. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for lip hives is essential for managing this condition effectively.

Causes of Lip Hives
Lip hives can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:
1. Allergic Reactions: Common allergens include certain foods (like nuts, shellfish, or dairy), medications (such as antibiotics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), and environmental factors (like pollen or pet dander). If you have a history of allergies, this could be a potential cause.

2. Insect Bites: As you mentioned, the appearance of small, raised bumps can resemble insect bites. If you have been bitten by an insect, it could lead to localized swelling and hives.

3. Physical Triggers: Factors such as heat, cold, pressure, or sunlight can induce hives in some individuals. If you have been exposed to extreme temperatures or have had pressure applied to your lips (like from a mask or tight clothing), this could be a contributing factor.

4. Stress: Emotional stress can also trigger hives in some people. If you have been experiencing heightened stress levels, this could be a factor.

5. Infections: Viral infections can sometimes lead to hives as a secondary reaction. If you have had a recent illness, this might be relevant.

Symptoms of Lip Hives
The symptoms of lip hives can vary but typically include:
- Redness and Swelling: The affected area may appear red and swollen, which can be alarming.

- Raised Bumps: These can be small and resemble mosquito bites, as you described.

- Itching or Burning Sensation: Many individuals experience itching or a burning sensation in the affected area.

- Discomfort: Depending on the severity, you may feel discomfort while eating or speaking.

Treatment Options
If you suspect that you have lip hives, here are some treatment options to consider:
1. Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or loratadine (Claritin), can help reduce itching and swelling. These medications work by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

2. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the affected area can help reduce swelling and provide relief from itching.

3. Avoid Triggers: If you can identify a specific trigger (like a certain food or medication), avoiding it in the future can help prevent recurrence.

4. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and itching when applied to the affected area.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the hives persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms (such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, or dizziness), seek medical attention immediately. This could indicate a more severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis, which requires urgent care.

Conclusion
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing on your lips could indeed be indicative of hives. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and consider potential triggers. If the condition does not improve or if you have concerns about your health, consulting with a healthcare professional is advisable. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
