Recurring Painful Bump Near Anus: Causes and Treatment Options - Dermatology

Strange suspected acne issues?

Hello, I would like to ask about a bump that has developed on the outer area of the anal folds.
It resembles a large pimple and is painful, but it is not red and does not have any pus.
It is hard and cannot be squeezed to release anything.
I had a similar bump in the same location before, which disappeared after several days, and once it was gone, I could no longer feel any hard lump—it returned to normal.
However, after a while, it suddenly appeared again in the same spot.
Is this simply a bacterial infection? Should I just apply medication to reduce inflammation? Why does it keep recurring in the same location? Thank you.

Nìmíng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/10/31

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to determine the issue.
If it is very concerning, please seek medical attention as soon as possible.
A proper examination is necessary to understand the problem and to be able to address it.

More Info

Recurring painful bumps near the anus can be concerning and may arise from various causes. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing a recurring bump that resembles a pimple, is painful, and has no visible signs of infection such as redness or pus. This situation can be frustrating, especially since it has occurred multiple times in the same location.

Possible Causes
1. Folliculitis: This is an infection or inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur in the anal area. It may present as a painful bump and can recur if the underlying cause is not addressed.

2. Abscess: An anal abscess can form when bacteria infect the tissue around the anus. While you mentioned that there is no pus, it’s still possible that a small abscess could form and resolve on its own.

3. Pilonidal Cyst: This is a cyst that can occur near the tailbone and may cause pain and discomfort. It can become inflamed and may recur if not properly treated.

4. Hemorrhoids: Swollen veins in the rectal area can sometimes present as painful lumps. They can be internal or external and may cause discomfort, especially during bowel movements.

5. Skin Tags: These are benign growths that can occur around the anal area. While they are typically painless, they can become irritated and cause discomfort.

6. Warts or Other Skin Conditions: Genital warts or other dermatological conditions could also present as bumps in the anal area.

Treatment Options
1. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter topical antibiotics or anti-inflammatory creams may help reduce inflammation and prevent infection. However, if the bump is recurrent, it may require a more targeted approach.

2. Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses to the area can help alleviate pain and promote drainage if there is an underlying abscess.

3. Hygiene: Maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Ensure the area is clean and dry, and avoid using harsh soaps that could irritate the skin.

4. Avoiding Irritation: Wearing loose-fitting clothing and avoiding prolonged sitting can help reduce irritation in the area.

5. Medical Evaluation: If the bump continues to recur, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies to determine the exact cause. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to rule out other conditions.

Why Recurrence?
The recurrence of the bump in the same location may indicate that there is an underlying issue that has not been fully resolved. For instance, if it is related to a hair follicle, the hair may continue to become ingrown or infected. If it is a cyst or abscess, it may not have fully drained or healed, leading to repeated flare-ups.

Conclusion
While it may be tempting to self-treat with over-the-counter medications, it is essential to seek professional medical advice, especially since the bump is painful and recurrent. A healthcare provider can offer a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific condition. They may also provide guidance on preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and relief from discomfort.
