Can rectal lesions, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures cause frequent urination?
Hello, doctor.
I previously inquired about my frequent urination issue, and I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
In mid-September, I visited the clinic for internal hemorrhoids and underwent rubber band ligation for three hemorrhoids.
After the procedure, I experienced frequent urination due to irritation in the anal-rectal area.
Once the pain subsided, the frequent urination stopped, but perhaps due to the sensitivity of the rectum during the recovery period, I also experienced frequent bowel movements and difficulty in defecation.
Just yesterday, during a follow-up appointment, the doctor ligated the third hemorrhoid and mentioned that I have an anal fissure, attributing it to hard stools and advising me to drink more water (which aligns with what my urologist suggested).
I would like to ask if the anal fissure could be a cause of my frequent urination? I consulted my colorectal specialist, and he mentioned that taking sitz baths could help alleviate the symptoms.

Rectal issues such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures can indeed contribute to symptoms like frequent urination, although the connection may not be immediately apparent. The relationship between rectal discomfort and urinary frequency is primarily due to the anatomical proximity of the rectum and bladder, as well as the shared nerve pathways that can lead to overlapping symptoms.
When you experience pain or discomfort in the rectal area, such as from hemorrhoids or fissures, it can lead to increased sensitivity in the pelvic region. This heightened sensitivity may cause a reflexive response that can stimulate the bladder, resulting in the sensation of needing to urinate more frequently. Additionally, if you are experiencing constipation or hard stools, which can accompany anal fissures, the straining during bowel movements can put pressure on the bladder, further contributing to the feeling of urgency or frequency in urination.
In your case, after undergoing rubber band ligation for hemorrhoids, you mentioned that the rectal area was sensitive and that you experienced frequent urination during this time. This aligns with the idea that rectal irritation can lead to increased urinary frequency. Once the discomfort subsided, your urinary symptoms also improved, indicating a potential link between the two.
Moreover, the presence of anal fissures, which can be exacerbated by hard stools, may lead to a cycle of discomfort that affects both bowel and bladder function. Your doctor’s advice to increase water intake is crucial, as proper hydration can help soften stools and reduce the strain during bowel movements, potentially alleviating both the fissures and any associated urinary symptoms.
It’s also worth noting that stress and anxiety related to pain from rectal issues can lead to increased awareness of bodily sensations, including the urge to urinate. This psychological component can amplify the perception of urinary frequency, making it feel more pronounced.
In summary, while rectal issues like hemorrhoids and fissures are not direct causes of frequent urination, they can create a scenario where the discomfort and sensitivity in the pelvic region lead to increased urinary frequency. It is essential to address both the rectal issues and any urinary symptoms in a comprehensive manner. Continuing to follow your healthcare provider's recommendations, including hydration and possibly dietary adjustments to prevent hard stools, will be beneficial. If urinary symptoms persist or worsen, further evaluation may be warranted to rule out other underlying conditions.
