Conception Date Calculation
Hello Doctor, I found out I was pregnant on October 14, and during a gynecological examination on October 17, it was confirmed that I was six weeks along with a heartbeat.
However, I have been troubled by a question for a long time.
I have been in a stable relationship with my boyfriend for five years, but in September, I had sexual intercourse with an ex-lover on September 12 and September 18 without protection, although I did withdraw before ejaculation.
With my stable boyfriend, we had unprotected intercourse on September 2, 6, 7, and 27, also with withdrawal before ejaculation.
In the past, this method has not resulted in pregnancy, so I was really shocked to suddenly find out I was pregnant and I don’t know who the father is.
I had my period from August 26 to September 2.
I would like to ask when the conception date was and how I can determine who the father is before deciding whether to terminate the pregnancy or continue it.
An Na, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/11/18

Understanding conception dates can be quite complex, especially when there are multiple sexual partners involved and various factors that can influence the timing of ovulation and fertilization. Based on the information provided, let's break down the situation to help clarify the possible conception dates and the implications of your pregnancy.
First, let's establish the timeline based on your menstrual cycle. You mentioned that your last menstrual period (LMP) was from August 26 to September 2. Given a typical menstrual cycle of around 28 days, ovulation would likely have occurred approximately 14 days after the start of your last period, which would place it around September 10. However, cycles can vary, and ovulation can occur earlier or later, especially if your cycles are irregular.
You had sexual encounters with your ex-partner on September 12 and September 18, and with your current boyfriend on September 2, 6, 7, and 27. Since you mentioned that you used withdrawal (pull-out method) during these encounters, it is important to note that while this method can reduce the risk of pregnancy, it is not foolproof. Sperm can still be present in pre-ejaculate fluid, which means there is a possibility of conception occurring even if withdrawal was practiced.
Given the timing of your sexual encounters, the most likely window for conception would be around September 10 to September 18. The encounters with your ex-partner on September 12 and 18 fall within this timeframe, making it plausible that either of these encounters could have resulted in pregnancy. The encounter with your boyfriend on September 6 is also within the ovulation window, but since you have a stable relationship with him, it may complicate the decision-making process regarding the pregnancy.
You mentioned that you confirmed your pregnancy on October 14, and during your check-up on October 17, it was noted that you were approximately six weeks along with a detectable heartbeat. This would align with a conception date around late September, which further supports the possibility of conception occurring during your encounters with either partner.
To determine paternity, the most definitive method would be to conduct a DNA test after the baby is born. This would provide clarity on who the biological father is, allowing you to make informed decisions regarding your pregnancy.
In summary, based on your menstrual cycle and the timing of your sexual encounters, it is likely that conception occurred between September 10 and September 18. Given the uncertainty surrounding paternity, it is advisable to consider a DNA test post-delivery to ascertain the biological father. In the meantime, focus on your health and well-being during this pregnancy, and consult with your healthcare provider for further guidance and support as you navigate this complex situation.
