Loss of libido?
Hello, doctor.
About five months ago, I suddenly lost my sex drive, and I don't know why.
I went to see a doctor, and after a blood test, the doctor said my testosterone level was 550.
The doctor mentioned that at my age, it could be higher, but it was still considered normal.
I was then prescribed maca, but I haven't noticed any significant improvement since I started taking it.
I only began having a sexual partner this year; for the past ten years, I frequently watched pornography and engaged in solo activities.
Now, even watching porn doesn't excite me much, let alone the feeling during actual sex—I'm completely unaroused, which makes it difficult for me to achieve an erection.
The sensation of climax is also not as intense as it used to be, and I feel that having sex is not as pleasurable as self-stimulation while watching porn.
It feels a bit strange, and I find it easy to get distracted.
Overall, I watch very little porn now and feel indifferent about women's bodies.
Should I completely abstain from sexual activity? I currently have very little sensation even during masturbation, but sometimes I still force myself to do it.
If I completely abstain for three months starting now, will it fully improve? Or should I go to the hospital for a thorough examination instead of just a blood test? Thank you for your help.

Hello: It seems more related to psychological factors.
If you don't want to, it's best to temporarily stop sexual activity and avoid watching adult films.
If there is no improvement after two weeks, you should visit a urologist.
Some doctors specialize in sexual function and can help you resolve the issue.

More Info
Sudden loss of libido can be a distressing experience, and it’s important to understand that various factors can contribute to this condition. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing a significant decrease in sexual desire and arousal, which has affected your sexual experiences and overall enjoyment. Let’s explore some potential causes and solutions.
Causes of Sudden Loss of Libido
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Testosterone levels play a crucial role in sexual desire for both men and women. Although your doctor indicated that your testosterone level of 550 ng/dL is within the normal range, individual variations exist. Factors such as age, stress, and overall health can influence how your body responds to these hormones.
2. Psychological Factors: Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or stress can significantly impact libido. The fact that you mentioned a history of frequent pornography consumption and subsequent changes in sexual arousal suggests that psychological factors may be at play. The brain's reward system can become desensitized, leading to diminished sexual excitement and satisfaction.
3. Relationship Dynamics: Since you mentioned that you recently started having a sexual partner, the dynamics of this new relationship could also be influencing your libido. Emotional connection, comfort level, and communication with your partner are essential for a fulfilling sexual experience.
4. Medications: You mentioned taking Maca, which is often used as a natural supplement to enhance libido. However, it’s essential to consider that other medications or supplements you may be taking could also affect your sexual desire.
5. Lifestyle Factors: Diet, exercise, sleep patterns, and substance use (such as alcohol or recreational drugs) can all impact libido. A sedentary lifestyle or poor nutrition can lead to decreased energy levels and motivation, affecting sexual desire.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Since your symptoms have persisted despite taking Maca, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional who specializes in sexual health or endocrinology. A thorough evaluation, including hormone testing and a review of your medical history, can help identify any underlying issues.
2. Psychological Support: Engaging with a therapist or counselor can help address any psychological factors contributing to your loss of libido. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can be particularly effective in addressing issues related to anxiety, depression, or relationship dynamics.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Consider making lifestyle changes that promote overall well-being. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques (such as mindfulness or yoga) can enhance your physical and mental health, potentially improving libido.
4. Open Communication with Your Partner: Discussing your feelings and experiences with your partner can foster intimacy and understanding. This communication can help alleviate any pressure you may feel during sexual encounters and create a more supportive environment.
5. Exploration of Sexuality: Rather than completely abstaining from sexual activity, consider exploring different forms of intimacy that may reignite your interest. This could include focusing on non-sexual forms of affection or experimenting with new activities that enhance your connection with your partner.
6. Avoiding Overstimulation: If you find that pornography has negatively impacted your sexual response, consider reducing or eliminating its use. This may help reset your sexual arousal patterns and allow you to engage more fully with real-life sexual experiences.
Conclusion
A sudden loss of libido can stem from a complex interplay of hormonal, psychological, relational, and lifestyle factors. It’s crucial to approach this issue holistically, considering both physical and emotional aspects. Consulting with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation and exploring psychological support can provide valuable insights and potential solutions. Remember, it’s essential to be patient with yourself as you navigate this experience, as improvements may take time and require a multifaceted approach.
