Will the lump left by lymphangitis not go away?

Last month, I had inflammation in my axillary lymph nodes.
I was very busy at the time and didn't see a doctor.
A few days later, the symptoms of redness, swelling, heat, and pain disappeared, but it left an oval-shaped lump, about a little over a centimeter.
It is more noticeable when I raise my arm.
Compared to when it was inflamed, it has become softer, but it hasn't disappeared after a month.
I've heard that recurrent lymph node inflammation can lead to fibrosis.
Since this area has been inflamed twice already, will it really persist?

In the above situation, it is advisable to first visit a dermatologist or a surgical outpatient clinic for evaluation by a specialist.

Lymphadenitis, which is the inflammation of the lymph nodes, can indeed lead to swelling that may persist even after the acute symptoms have resolved. In your case, it sounds like you experienced a typical inflammatory response characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain, which eventually subsided. However, the lingering oval-shaped lump you describe is not uncommon following an episode of lymphadenitis.

When lymph nodes become inflamed, they can undergo various changes. Initially, they may swell due to an increase in lymphatic fluid and immune cell activity. Once the inflammation resolves, the lymph node may not return to its original size immediately. It can remain enlarged for weeks or even months, depending on several factors, including the severity of the initial inflammation, the presence of any underlying conditions, and individual healing responses.

The fact that your lymph node has softened is a positive sign, indicating that the acute inflammatory process is likely resolving. However, the persistence of the lump can be concerning, especially if you have a history of recurrent inflammation in that area. Repeated episodes of lymphadenitis can lead to fibrosis, which is the thickening and scarring of connective tissue. This can result in a lymph node that remains enlarged or feels firm even after the inflammation has subsided.

It’s important to monitor the lymph node for any changes. If it continues to persist without signs of improvement, or if you experience new symptoms such as pain, fever, or additional swelling in other lymph nodes, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the lymph node further and rule out any other underlying conditions.

In some cases, if a lymph node remains enlarged for an extended period, a biopsy may be warranted to ensure that there are no malignancies or other serious conditions present. While the likelihood of a serious issue is low, especially if the lymph node has softened and you are asymptomatic, it is always better to err on the side of caution.

In summary, while lymph node swelling from lymphadenitis can resolve, it may take time, and some changes can remain. Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is crucial to ensure that any persistent changes are appropriately evaluated. If you have concerns about the lump or any new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
