Left neck issues?
Hello, doctor! I have some questions that need answers.
I visited an ENT specialist and had an ultrasound done, but the issue still hasn't been resolved.
I sometimes feel a sensation of something getting stuck when swallowing saliva (but not when eating).
Could this be due to globus sensation? Later, I noticed that the left side of my neck feels hard (but it doesn't hurt), and it doesn't appear swollen or like a protruding lump.
When I touch both sides with my fingers, the left side feels noticeably harder.
When I tilt my head to the left and right, I can see a clear difference between both sides.
I have been actively seeing doctors, but after the ultrasound, the doctor said everything looked fine, and the lymph nodes were normal.
They mentioned that my thyroid is slightly enlarged but not abnormal, and the doctor said some people naturally have larger thyroids.
Is this true? A few days ago, I also consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who said my pituitary gland is secreting abnormally, which they suggested could indicate hyperthyroidism.
Additionally, could it be that the muscles on the left side of my neck are different? I don't recall this being the case before.
I'm feeling quite confused and have no idea which specialty to consult—ENT, endocrinology, orthopedics, or hematology/oncology?

Thyroid function abnormalities can be assessed through blood tests, while the structure or size of the thyroid gland should be evaluated using imaging techniques.
It is recommended to consult an endocrinologist for further assessment.
Please note that online consultations do not equate to in-person visits and cannot provide diagnoses or treatment recommendations.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the issues you're experiencing with your left neck and swallowing difficulties. It sounds like you've been through a lot already, and it's understandable to feel confused about the next steps in your diagnosis and treatment.
Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of symptoms that could be related to several potential conditions. The sensation of something being "stuck" when swallowing, particularly when it occurs only with saliva and not with food, can sometimes be associated with a condition known as globus sensation. This is often a benign condition that can be related to anxiety, muscle tension, or irritation in the throat. However, it can also be indicative of other issues, such as esophageal motility disorders or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The hardness you feel on the left side of your neck could be due to several factors. It might be related to muscle tension, especially if you've been experiencing stress or discomfort in that area. Muscle tightness can lead to a feeling of hardness or stiffness, and it may be more pronounced on one side. On the other hand, if there is a noticeable difference in texture or firmness between the two sides of your neck, it could be worth investigating further.
You mentioned that your ultrasound did not reveal any significant abnormalities in the lymph nodes, which is reassuring. However, the enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) that your doctor noted could be a contributing factor to your symptoms. It's true that some individuals naturally have larger thyroid glands without any underlying pathology, but it is essential to monitor thyroid function through blood tests. An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can lead to various symptoms, including anxiety, weight loss, and changes in heart rate, among others.
Regarding the suggestion from the traditional Chinese medicine practitioner about abnormal pituitary secretion, it’s important to clarify that the pituitary gland regulates several hormones, including those that affect the thyroid. If there is a concern about thyroid function, it would be prudent to have a comprehensive thyroid panel done, which includes TSH, Free T4, and Free T3 levels, to assess your thyroid function accurately.
As for the question of whether the left neck muscle is different, it is possible that muscle imbalances can develop over time, especially if you have a habit of favoring one side due to discomfort or pain. Physical therapy could be beneficial in this case, as it can help address muscle imbalances and improve overall neck function.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult with a few specialists. An ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor can further evaluate your swallowing difficulties and any potential throat issues. An endocrinologist would be appropriate for assessing your thyroid function and any hormonal imbalances. If muscle tension is a significant concern, a physical therapist or a neurologist could also provide insights into muscle function and any neurological aspects that may be contributing to your symptoms.
In summary, while it can be overwhelming to navigate multiple symptoms and potential diagnoses, focusing on a multidisciplinary approach may provide you with the clarity and treatment you need. Keep advocating for your health, and don't hesitate to seek second opinions if you feel your concerns are not being addressed adequately. Best wishes for your health and recovery!
