Profuse nasal bleeding?
Hello, I have been experiencing significant discomfort in my nose lately.
This morning, I woke up with severe nasal congestion and noticed a lot of blood when blowing my nose.
I have been regularly visiting an otolaryngologist who performed a nasal endoscopy and indicated that my allergies are quite severe, but there are no other issues, although I do have a deviated septum.
Do I need to undergo any further tests? Thank you.

Hello: Frequent nosebleeds are often related to the rupture of microvessels in the nasal septum.
It is advisable to manage allergic rhinitis first.
If bleeding persists, a visit to an otolaryngologist for further examination is necessary.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Severe nasal bleeding can be concerning, especially when it occurs frequently or in large amounts. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing significant nasal congestion and bleeding, which has prompted you to seek further evaluation from an ENT specialist. Given that you have already undergone a nasal endoscopy and have been diagnosed with severe allergies and a deviated septum, it is important to consider a few factors before determining whether additional tests are necessary.
Firstly, the presence of nasal bleeding can often be attributed to several common causes, including dry air, nasal trauma (such as vigorous nose blowing), and underlying conditions like allergic rhinitis or sinusitis. In your case, the severe allergies you mentioned could be contributing to the inflammation and fragility of the nasal mucosa, making it more susceptible to bleeding. Additionally, a deviated septum can lead to uneven airflow and pressure in the nasal passages, which may exacerbate the issue.
If your ENT specialist has already performed a thorough examination and ruled out other serious conditions, such as nasal polyps or tumors, it may not be necessary to undergo further invasive testing at this time. However, if you continue to experience frequent or severe nasal bleeding, or if you notice any other concerning symptoms—such as significant pain, swelling, or changes in your sense of smell—it would be prudent to follow up with your ENT doctor. They may recommend additional imaging studies, such as a CT scan, to assess the sinuses and nasal passages more comprehensively.
In the meantime, there are several strategies you can employ to help manage your symptoms and reduce the likelihood of further bleeding:
1. Humidification: Using a humidifier in your home can help maintain moisture in the air, which may alleviate dryness in your nasal passages and reduce the risk of bleeding.
2. Nasal Saline Sprays: Regular use of saline nasal sprays can help keep the nasal mucosa moist and promote healing.
3. Avoiding Irritants: Try to avoid exposure to irritants such as smoke, strong odors, and allergens that can exacerbate your symptoms.
4. Gentle Nose Blowing: Be cautious when blowing your nose; doing so gently can help prevent further trauma to the delicate nasal tissues.
5. Allergy Management: Work with your healthcare provider to manage your allergies effectively. This may include medications such as antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids.
6. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-ups with your ENT specialist are essential to monitor your condition and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
In conclusion, while your current evaluation may not necessitate further testing, ongoing symptoms warrant close monitoring and communication with your healthcare provider. If your nasal bleeding persists or worsens, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, and it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to persistent symptoms.
