Traditional Chinese Medicine Issues

Hello doctor, I would like to ask if the following could cause a decrease in menstrual flow? Banxia Xiexin Decoction 4.0g, Danggui Shaoyao Decoction 4.0g, Qibao Meiranzidan 3.5g, Bai Zi Ren 0.5g, She Chuang Zi 0.5g, Miao Gu Xiao 0.5g, Bai Guo 0.5g, Pu Huang 0.5g, taken four times a day before meals and before bed for six days.
I started taking it on the second day of my period (which was normal), before bed, and the next day, which was supposed to be the third day of my period, the flow was like it was nearing the end of my period.
Could this be related to the Chinese medicine? Thank you.

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/12/07

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear anonymous user: Among these medications, the bitter and cold herbs Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis) and Huanglian (Coptis chinensis) in Banxia Xinxin Decoction may have anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects, which could potentially reduce menstrual flow.
However, Danggui (Angelica sinensis) is known for its blood-nourishing properties, Ginkgo biloba can increase blood flow, and Puhuang (Typha angustifolia) promotes blood circulation and resolves stasis.
Together, these ingredients can achieve a balance, so overall, this formula is unlikely to cause a significant reduction in menstrual blood volume.
Nevertheless, individual constitution may also affect the efficacy of the medication.
Wishing you health and safety! Sincerely, Yen Su-mei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital.

More Info

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history of being used to regulate various bodily functions, including menstrual flow. The herbs you mentioned, such as Banxia (半夏), Danggui (當歸), and others, have specific properties that can influence the menstrual cycle.
1. Understanding the Herbs:
- Banxia (半夏): Traditionally used to resolve phlegm and harmonize the stomach. It is not typically associated with menstrual regulation.

- Danggui (當歸): Known as a blood tonic, it is often used to nourish the blood and regulate menstruation. However, in certain formulations, it may also help in alleviating menstrual pain rather than increasing flow.

- Qibao Meiran Dan (七寶美髯丹): This is a formula often used for nourishing the liver and kidneys, which can indirectly support menstrual health.

- Bai Zi Ren (柏子仁) and She Chuang Zi (蛇床子): These herbs are generally used for calming the mind and treating conditions like insomnia or skin issues, respectively, and are not directly linked to menstrual flow.

- Other herbs like Ginkgo (白果) and Pu Huang (蒲黃) have their own uses, but their effects on menstrual flow can vary.

2. Potential Effects on Menstrual Flow:
- The reduction in menstrual flow you experienced could be influenced by the combination of herbs you are taking. Some TCM practitioners believe that certain herbs can have a cooling effect on the body, which may lead to a decrease in menstrual blood flow.
- Additionally, if the herbs are tonifying in nature, they might be working to balance your body's energy (Qi) and blood, which could also affect the amount of menstrual blood produced.

3. Timing and Dosage:
- The timing of when you started taking the herbs (on the second day of your period) could also play a role. If your body is already in a state of balance, introducing these herbs may have a more pronounced effect on your menstrual flow.

- The dosage and frequency of the herbs can also impact their effects. Taking them four times a day may lead to a stronger influence on your body compared to a lower dosage.

4. Individual Variability:
- Each person's body responds differently to herbal treatments. Factors such as your overall health, diet, stress levels, and even the specific formulation of the herbs can all contribute to how your menstrual cycle is affected.

5. Recommendations:
- If you notice a significant change in your menstrual flow that concerns you, it is advisable to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner. They can assess your individual constitution and the specific herbs you are taking to determine if adjustments are necessary.

- It may also be beneficial to monitor your menstrual cycle over the next few months to see if this change persists or if it was a one-time occurrence.

In conclusion, while TCM can influence menstrual flow, the effects can vary widely based on individual circumstances and the specific herbs used. It is essential to approach herbal treatments with caution and seek professional guidance to ensure they align with your health goals and conditions.
