Drug interactions

Hello, I would like to ask about my current situation.
I am using Nina coated tablets as a 21-day oral contraceptive, but due to a cold and mild asthma, I need to take medication.
The medications I am taking include Mosapride 5mg/tab (GI) Mozapry, Prednisolone 5mg/tab DoNison (yellow tablet), and Pseudoephedrine 120mg + Loratadine 5mg/tab (antihistamine) LoraPseudo.
Could these medications interact with my contraceptive pill? Will this lead to the contraceptive pill being ineffective?

ViVi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/12/14

Dr. Chen Yuemei reply Pharmacology

Hello: After checking, the cold medication you are taking does not interact with Nina (containing cyproterone acetate/ethinylestradiol) and will not affect the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill.

When it comes to the use of medications during pregnancy, especially concerning their potential interactions with birth control methods, it is crucial to understand how different drugs can affect each other and the overall health of both the mother and the fetus. In your case, you are currently using a combined oral contraceptive pill (Nina) while also needing to take medications for a cold and mild asthma symptoms, including Mosapride, Prednisolone, and a combination of Pseudoephedrine and Loratadine.

Firstly, let's address the concern regarding the interaction between your cold medications and the oral contraceptive pill. Generally, most common cold medications, including antihistamines like Loratadine and decongestants like Pseudoephedrine, do not significantly affect the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives. The primary concern with drug interactions and birth control typically arises with certain antibiotics (like Rifampin) and some anticonvulsants, which can lower the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. However, the medications you mentioned do not fall into these categories.

1. Mosapride: This medication is primarily used to treat gastrointestinal issues and does not have a known interaction with hormonal contraceptives. It works by enhancing gastrointestinal motility and is not associated with any effects on hormone levels.

2. Prednisolone: As a corticosteroid, Prednisolone is often used to reduce inflammation and manage conditions like asthma. While corticosteroids can have various effects on the body, they do not interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. However, long-term use of corticosteroids can have other health implications, so it’s essential to use them under medical supervision.

3. Pseudoephedrine and Loratadine: This combination is commonly used for relieving symptoms of allergies and colds. Neither of these medications has been shown to affect the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant, and Loratadine is an antihistamine; both are generally considered safe to use with birth control pills.

In summary, based on the medications you are taking, there is no significant evidence to suggest that they would interfere with the effectiveness of your oral contraceptive pill. However, it is always advisable to consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist regarding any new medications you are prescribed, especially when you are on birth control. They can provide personalized advice and ensure that all medications you are taking are safe and effective.

Moreover, it’s important to monitor your health and any potential side effects from the medications you are taking. If you experience any unusual symptoms or have concerns about your medications, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.

In conclusion, while your current medications for cold and asthma do not appear to interact with your birth control pill, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring your health and the effectiveness of your contraceptive method. Always prioritize your health and well-being, and seek professional advice when in doubt.
